To be fair, it was the only name he spelled correctly on the application

Well, Powers is a fairly common surname.  Phoenix is unusual but not unknown as a given name.  Thor makes me think the parents had a definite geeky side.

/and they couldn't pass up the chance to give the kid a really outstanding name

There is only one person who should carry the name Thor.

I'm changing his name to Tim.

Is he by any chance related to Max Power?

My best friend's last name is Irish. When people ask her what her last name is, she says "It's Irish" and they go "Ok... like Mcdougal?"

With a name like that, a life of crime is pretty much your only other option, if you weren't born a demigod.

I had an Uncle Thor (pronounced Tor), it was short for Thorvil. I also had an Uncle Ing (Ingvald) and an Uncle Odie (Odin). Although somehow I doubt Mr. Powers is Norweigan.

Well, yeah, that was my first thought.  Then I wondered just how a kid could be given tha name by his parents and came up with that rationalization.

/not that parents are inherently rational

Roman influence. There are a lot of carryovers between the germanic tribes and the romans. The influences can be seen even in the writings of tacitus who traveled with Caesar during their time along the germanic tribes.

It's not all that uncommon either, and is reflected in the commonality between germanic and Ruso-Nordic beliefs given the interactions of the indoeuropean peoples. We often see it in the influences on language, too.

It's no surprise that our modern traditions and linguistic characteristics, including names, share background between lots of cultures.

Something I tripped over doing geneology - one of the co-founders of Melbourne (Australia) had the surname "Batman" and Melbourne used to be named "Batmania" after him.

Thankfully Mr John Batman later died of syphilis - and the stigma led to the renaming of Batmania to Melbourne.

He was obviously trying to do the cops a favor. After unleashing the full might if his name every police station in the county would have been leveled. The man was just trying to save lives by hiding his true name.
