(Des Moines Register)   Apparently we can't repeat it enough: No matter how soft and comfy they look, you should never take a nap on railroad tracks   (blogs.desmoinesregister.com) divider line 17

He had his head to the rail listening for approaching indians.

Same thing just happened here in Pittsburgh earlier this week along CSX tracks along the Ohio River.  I run all the time and a lot of my runs are along rails-to-trails paths.  It's amazing the number of people I see walking on the tracks with headphones on.  First, there's a trail 30' away that parallels the tracks.  Second, the rail lines in this city are always busy - several trains per hour and they're usually going over 40mph.  Lastly, headphones?  Really?  I often wonder if they're listening to one of those narrated books from that guy named Darwin.

18 seems a little young to take the itinerant hobo lifestyle all the way to its bittersweet conclusion, Passed or suicide there can't be a good backstory here.

A couple kids here in the STL area got themselves squashed flat by trains a few months back. Both were walking the tracks wearing headphones.

I still think they were suicides (or so friggin' stupid they're the next thing to it). My shotgun club is next to (about 500' away from) two busy rail lines... with actual earplugs in and shooting a shotgun I still hear every single train that comes by. If I were any closer I'd feel the ground vibrate. If you can't tell a train is bearing down on you, well, you're just too damn dumb to be helped. They don't chase you down. If you're deafening yourself while on the tracks I don't see any point in trying to protect your sorry stupid ass.

So your saying giving my nephew the train nut a R/R track pillow was a bad idea?

Did he go snap, crackle, pop when the train hit him?

Doesn't matter, subby, not when Darwin's spawn is whispering sweet nothings in your ear.

(what Darwin's spawn may look like...)

Had a trauma like that a few years back. Sliced the top of his head and his lower legs cleanly off.

Well, they DO call ties SLEEPERS in GB.

Also, no love for the poor engineers who have to live with that? Not being able to do a thing but watch them disappear under the pilot. Then some poor soul has to unwrap them from around an axle.

/Don't like RR right-of-way littered with yellow tarps.

it's called suicide, dum dums, it aint no accident

i myself planned to die by train several years ago, but it was so hot that i fell asleep only to wake and find the train going by a hundred yards away on ANOTHER track.

'i can't even die right!' i moaned'
