The only political gain are the idiots who deny reality for profit from corporations. There is a really good reason we would want to give shiat about planet Earth. There is no good reason to trash it for profit. We all live here. It is not like humans can just move to Mars when the shiat hits the fan.

I use NOAA for my every day weather forecasting needs, because it has no ads, and doesn't generally cater to the "OMG a Blizzard" hysteria crowd.  Anyway, the website was down this morning, so I googled NOAA news.  Turns out NOAA was accused of pumping up the climate change figures because of their placement of weather stations in heat sinks such as parking lots and such, which of course puts out higher night time temperatures.   Apparently they've moved about 250 stations to more reasonable locations in the last few years.

Carbon credits ring any bells?  I'm not saying we shouldn't each (personally) do things for the environment.  shiat, my car gets thirty six miles to the gallon, but to assume AGW isn't also a business is naive.

The only reason that carbon credits are suggested is because the GOP derides everything else as "too socialist"

So if man takes corrective action and returns the climate to year 19xx, we will automatically have, per your cartoon:

Ha, as someone that has lived off grant money, you might get the grant money no matter what the outcome is, but when your topic becomes less "sexy," that money might be a one time thing. And while you aren't getting rich, paying the bills does tend to take a high priority in my life. I've also worked in enough labs to know when the money isn't coming in, the whole lab's research can shift, even if you're getting scientifically interesting data.

I'm not saying scientist would lie about their topics (hell, they are peer-reviewed), but they might not feature the weaknesses in their data or methods unless they are critical in understanding the data presented or they are suggesting that for future research.

Unfortunately for science, we're being herded into the hollywood 'business' model of acquiring funding.  None of my grant proposals have been funded because my ideas aren't... and I'm quoting other primary investigators here... "aren't 'sexy' enough".  The reviewers themselves simply said that my current PI was funded but was too inexperienced (she's been an associate professor for 6 years) ; with no real criticism of the proposal itself. .  You need a problem, you need a disease to sell or the government/funding agency will look at you and say... "who the fark cares?"  I've even gotten career advice about integrating my hypotheses on addiction with other hot topics and using buzz words.  Addiction and cancer.  Addiction and Global Warming.

Nothing's going to change in America.   Not sure what other country's people say, but if they have a similar level of scientific illiteracy, I'm sure it's similar.

If it's hot, you hear "OMG global warming sucks"

If it's cold you hear "HAHA! What global warming?".

CO2 emissions continue to increase.  People are driving more, using more gasoline.  And the large strawman that has been placed up by the anti-GW people is that the pro-GW people want us to live in the Dark Ages...

Meanwhile, they want to export more coal to China through the PNW, despite no community wanting the jobs that are being offered based on a coal market that is shrinking due to the over abundance of natural gas (not to mention China has a major push to shift to nuclear and other possible importers are shifting to non-coal burning methods of energy generation too).  It's a shameless "Make as much money as possible before we can't sell it anymore and damn the consequences" ploy.

Still, there is some comfort in the fact that in America, we're going to adapt eventually, some things will get more expensive, but we're probably largely just going to keep living as we are, and grumbling about how much electricity and gas (if we're still using gas powered cars) costs.

Yeah, there was a massive stink on that, I remember. They even have a website pointing to these stations. I do prefer NOAA though for its weather data, or if on my Android phone: iMap Weather.

That's funny, I was typing out the very same thing.  With funding being as low as it's ever been, I'd be willing to propose that Santa Claus is real and I can prove it, if they'll fund me.  That's not the way it should be, but when your house note depends on you staying funded (or else the University gives you two years to re-obtain funding or GTFO), you get real creative real quick, or you jump on someone else's bandwagon.
