(The Atlantic Wire)   I wonder if Larry Ellison's views that NSA surveillance is not just a good thing but "essential" and that the government NEVER misuses this data has anything to do with the fact that the NSA is a very big Oracle client?   (theatlanticwire.com ) divider line

nahh sooo many good reasons to hate Ellison:
-for single-handedly destroying the America's Cup Race
-For trying to cripple Android with blatant patent-trolling
-and now, for being a dedicated swallower of fascism

Irving Maimway: And for destroying OpenSolaris and Ian Murdock's attempt to revive a once great OS.

Fortunately, even though Oracle washed their hands of it, it lives on as Illumos. There are several systems built around it, with differing goals: OpenIndiana, OmniOS, SmartOS, and NexentaStor, for instance. I doubt it will ever get the sort of mindshare that Linux has (and it's extra-picky about hardware, really preferring server-class hardware rather than desktop systems), but it still makes a damn fine server/NAS system.

/built my first OpenSolaris setup shortly before Oracle took over Sun and pulled the plug

Oracle's connections to the security apparatus have deep roots. In fact, the very name of Oracle comes from the code name of a CIA project which the founders had all worked on while at Ampex.

Not to mention their purchase of MySQL. That's gonna end badly.

People can always switch to MariaDB or (with a bit more effort) PostgreSQL.

The NSA's maintenance fees alone will pay for Larry's America Cup yacht, no doubt.
