Cubs fans scoff.

/off to kill a goat like I'm Phillipe Moyez or something

They've been overachieving compared to their Pythagorean W-L expectations, but they're still a pretty good team.  They're not necessarily a World Series team this year but there's no reason to panic.

Are the Pirates curse? No. Do Pittsburgh fans deserve to have their hearts broken year after year for all the "Six Rings!" sh*t they spew during the NFL season? Yes.

The 1927 Yankees lost four straight in mid-August.

Got swept by a sub-.500 team, too.

At least no one died falling off their stadium.

Also, the Nats have won four in a row.  Does that mean they are going to ride that into a playoff berth?

all the seven numerology a few  years back was annoying.  "ben wears #7!  this is his 7th year in the league!  it will be the 7th Lombardi trophy!  the game is on february 7!  the team hotel is on 7th street!"

and so on.  all these corny numerology statistics started getting thrown around.  there was one about some play in the AFC championship that began at the 7 yard line and ben completed 7 passes on the drive or some shiat.

and all for naught, of course.  ehh.  what are you gonna do.

All I know is that we had at least half a dozen "Hey, look how hot the Royals are! Isn't that wacky?" stories on Monday, and sure enough, loss last night. This 5-gamer at Detroit is going to be torture.

Angry much?

I was passively watching the game last night while doing work from home.  I turned it off after Marte dropped the ball.  I knew the outcome was sealed (and we were still up 3-2 at that point).  The way their offense has been playing (or should it be *hasn't* been playing?), they can't afford any errors in the field or poor pitching performances by their starters.  Their margin is razor thin and they've obviously done a tremendous job staying on the winning side of that razor for most of the season.

/angry at Cutch's play last night as well

Pittsburgh will make the playoffs. They look legitimately good to me and have a deep rotation the likes of which haven't been seen since a merely-90-year-old Jim Leyland managed the team.

Call me in a week. If they get swept again, I'll be in official panic mode

Regardless of who you were rooting for, last night's game was some of the best baseball this season.

Can anybody actually panic over the Pirates?

Pittsburgh is NINE games out front in the Wild Card standings (not to mention leading their division by 3)

They would have to completely collapse in an epic way to miss the playoffs all together.

No team would choke that hard, right?

cough cough, Atlanta 2011, cough cough

Me too. I very much enjoy a good fiasco and/or prolonged futility. There's something about the hapless person soldiering on in the face of inevitable failure that makes them far more interesting to me than the triumphant champion. Losing streaks reveal much more of a player/team/fanbase's character than winning streaks.

Relive that choke and the Sox too with probably the best opening to a baseball video game ever.

I still play that copy of the show. I'm not sure an intro could ever beat it, maybe the 2011 madden with mind heist playing.

The Pirates would have to do something really really remarkable to have a losing season this year.  Looks like it's just not in the cards this time.

p>. If you hated the KC vs Mai game last night you hate good baseball. A young fire baller vs a crafty veteran pitched gems.

And Clay Mathews wore 52, 5+2 = 7.  Wait I'm doing it wrong.

On a related note, I remember all the numerology crap that went around the internet on 9/11.

We Cubs fans have been doing that our whole lives and you guys just think we're a bunch of whiny assholes who ought to give up on the team but not before we tear down Wrigley and build a shiat ballpark that nobody but the Ricketts family actually wants in a location that would make Cubs fans share parking space and eardrums with one of the busiest airports on the planet.

agreed. You can't be flailing at 2-strike off speed pitches every time if you're the MVP...

Let's not forget the fact Matheny all but tried to give that game to the Pirates by removing Freese and double-switching out Holliday (after he twisted his ankle) so that the pitcher was batting 4th in the line-up and a relief pitcher batting twice in extra innings.  The game also had key outs with an infielder playing in the outfield (Walker on the shift with Adams up was in short right field) and an outfielder playing on the infield and part of the ever popular 6-9-3 DP in the 12th inning.

Postseason?  Hell, if they end the season one game above .500, I'll be happy.

Truly there is no greater sign of being cursed than a four-game losing streak in baseball. I don't know how they can possibly bounce back from this.

Still in first place, they'll be fine.

Cubs fan here, don't really care for either team, but definitely pulling for the Pirates to win the division and make some noise in the postseason, they deserve it. Just wanted to leave this here. For those that don't want to waste time clicking the link, the Pirates won 5-1 last night. Headline fail.
