It's like shooting fish in a barrel. I'm almost feeling sorry for the Russian government at this point.  It simply can't help itself.
The latest numbskull to shoot himself in the foot is Russia's World Cup Chief, Alexey Sorokin.

I don't think he's shot himself in the foot. Russian culture is still 19th century. Bribes are all paid, no harm will come of it for them, it might even boost their standing in Russia. It's down to the athletes and sponsors to stand up for gay rights, because the Russian govt, IOC and FIFA aren't going to.

I would sorely love to see those bodies insist Russia bends over and takes it like a man, or else FIFA and IOC pull out and leave Russia with shame running down its face, and stinging its eye.

Over the weekend, friend and I were discussing how foreign Russian culture still seems.  We determined we need to go.

So are they just against gay men or do they have a problem with lesbians too?
Because if they do the US woman's soccer team is wearing a bulls eye.

Hmmmm. Naked lesbian Nazi's.

If there's one thing I trust in the Russians, it's their ability to crush dissension. I'd like it better if they spent billions, threw an Olympics, and nobody showed up. Hell, we could hold a competing event in San Francisco.

Riiiiiiight.  They're going to go, spend money, advertise the Games, lend their star-power to Russia, and bring in tons of tourism.  And protest.  Sure.  That'll show 'em.

Farking Russians. You can't outlaw homosexuality. You have to deny them their basic civil rights like we do here in the United States. That's how civilized countries handle things.

Actually, it was more like the decade-long ass-kicking they took in Afghanistan, spending themselves into bankruptcy attempting to keep with NATO military spending, having 3 premiers die in quick succession, and Gorbachev's decision to no longer intervene in Eastern Europe's internal affairs. I think the 1980 Olympic boycott had as much effect on the downfall of the Soviet Union, as the African nations' boycott of the Montreal Olympics did on the end of apartheid in South Africa (i.e., bubkes).

Meh, you're probably right.  I still maintain, though, that protesting while there will probably do less than bubkes.

Case in point: Track & Field world championships are taking place in Moscow this week. American Nick Symmonds won silver in the 800m yesterday and told the media that he was dedicating it to his gay and lesbian friends.

One of these days a REAL journalist needs to ask one of these dipshiats "Aren't your worries about naked men in streets covered by common sense public indecency laws that everyone has?  Why do you need this additional law?"

In Russia's defense, they really aren't bothering to hide their pathetic scapegoating of homosexuals as the cause of their societal woes. I mean, even when a public official tries to whitewash the rationale, he doesn't hide the sneer on his face and the jerk off motion he's making to the side.

Fine. No Olympics in the South either.

But we are way ahead of them on gay rights. Our fight is over the expansion/inclusion of civil rights. For gays in Russia it's about the human right to exist.

Awww, sweetheart. Still upset about losing the civil war? Miffed about the darkies demanding that the US give them civil rights? I can see how a reminder of that during a sporting event 50 years ago would really get your goat.

So sorry smugly do right, but I happened to live during those times. Our family sweated out the safety of my sister in the Newark riots of July '67 and our uncle in the Washington DC riots after King was shot. So this BS political action by those two runners was definitely not appreciated; then when we found out that it has been staged by some "burn baby burn" college professor, we were REALLY pissed. Then near the end of the Olympics came George Foreman, fighting a Russian (the Cuban missile crisis was only five years previous) with the knowledge that he had Eastern Block judges and would have to knock him out to win. He did and right after they raised his arms he pulled a flag out of his pants and waved it around. It was a very healing moment, and to this day it has gone unnoticed while that other SH*T picture is constantly shown.

And of course, if you happen to point this out, which I always do, there is almost always some self righteous prick there to
insult me. That would be you, today.

I'm insulting you because you hold a silly grudge against a picture, and completely ignore WHY the riots happened. Black people rioting in the 60's? Gee I wonder why? Sorry your sis was scared, but she's fine. Good thing she wasn't black. Let it go.
