You have to be a farking idiot to pay $38K for a farking purse.

Yeah... racism... I know a woman that got that treatment regularly. Once they saw the black card though they never forgot her face.

Oh "that" black card.

Racism is terrible, but my opinion of purchasers of $40,000 handbags isn't much higher.

I've never seen a year that ended in June.

I saw a sickening video clip of Orca and her girlfriend / lover Gail King on Youtube once where they pretended they didn't know how to pump gas and all this other mundane shiat, despite the fact both of them didn't grow up rich.  It was just stupid, them acting like they were Paris Hilton or something.

Fiscal year was implied.

Replace "Oprah" with anyone else, and this would be front page news.  Why should she apologize because some douchebag in a store behaved like Mary Kate and Mary Frances in Pretty Woman?

FTFA "If somebody makes a mistake in the United States do we apologize in front of the whole country? No!"

Um... did I miss something?  Because I'm pretty sure our society does that fairly regularly.

Also, the phrase "Switzerland flap" made me think "Labia in Leiderhozen".  I hereby claim the rights to that porn film name.

"I didn't have anything that said 'I have money.' I wasn't wearing a diamond stud. I didn't have a pocketbook. I didn't wear Louboutin shoes. I didn't have anything,"

But it's because you're black they assumed you didn't have any money. Not because you were dressed like some schmoe off the street.

If I walked in wearing my usual t-shirt, cargo shorts and nike sandles, they would have told me the same damn thing.

Fark you Ophra. Fark you right in your sandy black-card having coont.

/Who the fark pays $38,000 for a purse?? It better come with $37,970 dollars cash in it.

I'm sure retail clerks get all kinds of shiat from people Oprah's age.

She used the "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" card, then the race card. Thanks for perpetuating the concept of the ugly American!

2013-08-13 08:27:59 AM
Maybe I'll use my black card to!

/It's from Amazon, I got 5 bucks to take a survey.

2013-08-13 08:28:56 AM
The store clerk has chimed in and gone on record as saying she didn't refuse to show the $38K purse to oompah.  And oompah had left the store by the time "lost in translation" was over.

FarkLordOfTheSith: I've never seen a year that ended in June.

It's called a fiscal year.  Why?  Because businesses, accountants, and governments aren't all that enthusiastic about having their financial deadlines converge on midnight of December 31st.

Yes, Oprah is a business.  A wildly successful business.

Oprah doesn't throw the "race card" very often. It's easy to believe that a shop clerk in a 98% (or thereabouts) white country wasn't happy to hand a $35,000 hand bag to a large black woman.  Oprah's claim doesn't seem at all outlandish, the shop clerk's denial kind of does.

/Just because she threw the race card doesn't mean that it wasn't a legitimate throw.

If I ran a small store in Switzerland, and some fat ugly obnoxious American came in demanding things in English, I'd kick her ass out too - doesn't matter if she was white, black, or grey.

Well, Oprah's already apologized:

"I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I'm really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland," Winfrey said Monday night

2013-08-13 08:33:40 AM
There are times when I wonder if I could just make a purse, throw a $700 price tag onto it and see if women just want it because the price tag is $700.

2013-08-13 08:34:10 AM
FTFA:
Swiss tourism officials and the boutique owner apologized for the incident last week, but Winfrey insists there's no need.
"It's not an indictment against the country or even that store," she continued. "It was just  one person who didn't want to offer me the opportunity to see the bag. So no apologies necessary from the country of  Switzerland. If somebody makes a mistake in the United States do we apologize in front of the whole country? No!"

It feels like she was just sharing an anecdote about one salesbiatch that stood out during her trip. I know I found it amusing and have had similar, although slightly less pricey, stories myself. It may have been racism, class-ism (is there a better term for economic discrimination?) but I'm sure that coont behind the counter is kicking herself.

/Yes, $40k for a purse is moronic
//But I've spend $5k on a watch, so I'm no better

The best punishment? The $77k sale that boutique lost.

No! Don't downplay this. Don't you understand? This is racism too! Lynchings, being denied the right to vote, sitting on the back of the bus, and now, enduring a snooty clerk before buying your $40,000 purse.
It's all part of the same shameful racist heritage

I think the term is 'asshole'.

Um no Oprah.  Appearance does make a difference when shopping for high end items.

You can be a billionaire and if you show up at a Ferrari dealership in a wife beater shirt, torn up jeans and flip flops you aren't going to be test driving a car until they figure out who you are.

Neither is a shop owner with $38,000 purses (not sure what you get for that), going to let the plebes handle it and get it dirty/steal it/ruin it somehow.

Great Janitor: There are times when I wonder if I could just make a purse, throw a $700 price tag onto it and see if women just want it because the price tag is $700.

There are companies that raise their price tag so more people buy their items.  It has nothing to do with quality, people just don't want to buy the "cheap" one.

I painted a really lame picture with my no-skillz and put it on Craigslist for $700.  No takers.

Yes, you could.  And two days later there would be a knock off version for $180.

Oprah, you could always buy a sufficiently opulent $1,000 purse and donate the rest to feeding starving children. But I guess those thousands of hungry mouths aren't as important as yet another bag you'll forget in your closet.

I've always thought tire manufacturers did that.
