All  the racism aside, who the fark spends $37,000 on a farking purse? She already has her girlfriend, who is she trying to impress with a $37k purse? I'd feel like as ashole spending $37k on whatever the male equivalent of a purse is, no matter how rich I was.

Hasn't Oprah made claims like this before?  That she was refused service in some fancy shop or other because she was black?

She looked at a frame behind me. Far above there was the 35,000 Swiss franc crocodile leather bag.

'I simply told her that it was like the one I held in my hand, only much more expensive, and that I could show her similar bags.
'It is absolutely not true that I declined to show her the bag on racist grounds. I even asked her if she wanted to look at the bag.

Maybe that's true, but if so, it sounds like you suck at your job.  A woman buying even a $100 purse is going to want to look at it and not something like it but cheaper.  If a dealership told me, "Just test drive this V6 Mustang, it's similar to the Cobra" I'd go to another dealer.

Since when would a salesperson not want to show someone a more expensive item with the hopes that they would purchase it?

I don't give a fark, but couldnt have this been avoided if the lady had done what the customer asked to be shown in the first place, rather than try to prove you know better than the customer?

Don't really care if the customer is Oprah or anyone else.

I hate it when I go somewhere, ask to be shown something, then the rep tells me "nah, look at this instead"... first show me the item I want to see, then you can offer your opinion, not before.

in some cases, salespeople make a snap judgment and think that showing something pricy is a waste of their time.

An old neighbor of mine told me a story once.  He was a retired Hughs Aircraft engineer and had bought apartment buildings in LA when you could do that on an engineers salary.  He became pretty wealthy, but he and his wife lived way below their means.  The only area that he splurged was cars.  He bought a new car, at the time a Lincoln Continental, every two years with cash, no payments.  He decided to surprise his wife with a new Jaguar.  So, after working on his own apartment building, he went to the nearest Jag dealer and asked to see one.

The dealer refused, saying it was clear he couldn't afford it.

Rather than argue, he left the dealer and bought his wife a new Cadillac.

Maybe that's her regular sales pitch. Maybe it's an area regularly frequented by tourists who always ask to see that bag because it's clearly something special. They spend a few minutes looking at the bag then get turned off when they see the price because holy crap, that's the price of a car. They decide "we're in the wrong place" and leave the store. Maybe this happens three or four times a day, so she just keeps going through her regular pitch, showing people the lower priced bags, hoping to get a sale and when they ask to see that one, she politely says "it's the same as the one you're looking at now, but much more expensive" to try to allow the client to save face, allowing the client the choice to stick with what she has or go ahead and ask to see the condo down-payment of a bag.

When this article first came out I laughed and said its "Another black person screaming racism to get in the news" I had about 15 angry black people call me cracker, racist, goto your klan meeting etc. I joked she needs to be in the news, since her TV show OWN is costing her hundreds of millions while it only has a handful of viewers. Not like it matters to her, she's insanely rich. I guess Rae Dawn Chong's comment was correct in the long run.

Seriously its getting annoying that one slight comment and black people will blow up like roid rage over it. Its sad to the point its starting to get comical.

That's a lot of maybes, though still possible. I have somehow been left with the impression that the swiss can be racist as all fark from other articles I have seen on fark.com. added to that the elitism among sales staff at shops like that, and I'm inclined to believe Oprahs description of the events as at least plausible.

I remember going to one of those fancy theaters with leather seats where you can get wine and cheese instead of popcorn and coca cola and being treated with some measure of looking-down-your-nosedness by some high school kid working there. It was almost comical, given I was probably making exponentially more per hour than the kid was, I just hadn't been there before and so didn't know where you picked up the wine...I was also wearing shorts and a t-shirt, so I'm sure the kid took it upon himself to feel better than me. See that at fancy hotels sometimes too, like the Dreams resort in Cancun. They fancy themselves somehow fancier than the other resorts (they don't do wrist bands, apparently that makes them infinitely classier). Not sure if there's some sort of hierarchy among the local hotel workers about which job is the most coveted according to how fancy the hotel is, but kid, you are still in the service industry, not an heir to the Hilton fortune, so get over yourself.

Absolutely a possibility.  It's the reason why I get tired of stories like Oprah's.  Not because race couldn't be the reason, or even one of several contributing factors, but because the first assumption was racism and no investigation was done to back it up.  Oprah got out in front of the story before anyone had a chance to respond or investigate.  It was more important to establish her narrative than to get things right.

Came here to say this. From what it sounds like, the salesgirl was honestly trying to say "This is a stupid price, way too expensive. Here's the same thing, but cheaper." But because of poor English skills, came across as "It's too expensive for you to look at."

I've done that, working pizza. $16 for a specialty pizza, when I can put in a 1 topper at $6, add the other ingredients, and come out with the same pizza but $4 cheaper. Never had a complaint about it, sometimes even got a tip despite working in-store.

Sometimes it's better not to say anything if you do anything, and sometimes it's better not to do anything at all.
The customer, Oprah or otherwise, will think you're correcting them. No matter how helpful or sincere you're trying to be, they'll think of it as belittling them.

Used to work at Moe's Southwest Grill. For the uninitiated:

Joey Bag of Donuts Burrito: No Sour Cream or Guacamole
Triple Lindy: Either Sour Cream or Guacamole
Homewrecker: Both Sour Cream and Guacamole

There is no size difference. The only difference is Sour Cream and/or Guacamole.
Even though a Joey would be $2 cheaper, some customers will be DAMNED before they let you give them a Homewrecker with no guacamole or sour cream, and even silently changing their bill to save them money will piss them off.

I agree. Oprah probably has her racist goggles on all the time. Personally, I think Oprah is a dumas for expecting a whole lot of sympathy because a person with poor English speaking skills didn't understand her desire to buy a $37,000 bag because she is Oprah. She really doesn't come off very sympathetic. Almost like she is throwing her weight around.

Plus this happened in Europe... I haven't been to the particular place where this occurred, but, in general I notice the ideas about "customer service" over there are rather different than what we expect in the states. The sales girl is probably equally rude to everyone, and this time it just happened to be a rich American celebrity who made a stink about it.

And on Friday, she's got a movie coming out about a guy who overcame racism.

The timing of this incident does seem suspect.

I was looking forward to seeing "The Butler" until I saw she was in it. Oprah has a way of non-verbally screaming "THIS IS IMPORTANT! THIS IS IMPORTANT!" in every movie she's in.
