Martin Luther, a German priest who wrote a letter called "95 Thesis" and nailed it to the door of a church. It was about the abuses of the Catholic Church and one of the first public acts of support for the Protestant religion.

Martin Luther.

If the judge has left it at "I'm changing the name" then I'd have been ok with it. Soon as she offered a relgious opinion tho I have issues with this ruling.

What is this, the third time this story has been greenlitSecond today?

Funny headline and 'Repeat' tag, your argument is invalid.

And that's why they'll have grounds to have it overturned, I'm guessing.

This. You are right on point, good sir. Correct decision for very lousy reasons.

That REALLY surprised me too. That being said, the judge was wrong.

What are the good reasons?

I think it's dumb as hell that Jaleesa named her kid Messiah, don't get me wrong.

But, other than the religion angle, why does should she be required to change it?

Except in Tennessee, aka "Central Inbredumfarkistan" (motto--"might as well do yer sister, she ain't no virgin, anyway"), Martin Luther is automatically presumed to have "restored" Christianity and did so on the shoulders of the cheering multitudes against the fire-breathing Pope and the handful of other guys who had managed to run things beforehand. He also is believed to have invented capitalism, apple pie, and Dodge Ram pick-em-up trucks.

How does the judge feel about immigrants named Jesus?

2013-08-12 01:01:37 PM
Plenty of people are named Jesús and nobody seems to be bothered over it.

2013-08-12 01:02:17 PM
What is really stupid is that no judge has ever ruled that a baby can't be named "shiatonya". I am not joking. There are women and girls in the USA currently named "shiatonya", and their parents haven't got a clue why it is a really stupid. Then again, these same people name their girls things like "LaTrina" and don't understand why people think they are morons. "Messiah" is nothing.

2013-08-12 01:02:32 PM
Sure, this SEEMS intolerant. But put it perspective. You would hardly expect the government in a Muslim country to allow anyone to name their child Mohamed, would you?

Forgive Goober. Like me, he comes from a land where Christianity doesn't stomp around in jackboots.

If we outlawed people from having the name Jesus,  baseball would be short a lot of utility infielders.

Really wish US had New Zealand (and other country's) style laws on what you can name your kid.

"The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ,"

Are you farking KIDDING me?!?!?

They were there about the LAST NAME, but the judge decided she needed to insert some Jesus into the proceedings.

Yeah, overturned...

"The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ," Judge Ballew

This judge needs to be fired IMMEDIATELY! No freaking religious zealots on the bench, dammit!!!!

Oh, look! the baby is black.  Why am I not surprised?  Cute little guy.  I used to work with a kid who was named Elohim.  I currently work with an Emanuel.  Their lives were hell growing up.  On the upside, if their wife/gf screams their name during sex, they can brag that they got their significant other to cry out to god during sex.

/almost as bad as the made up names the african community are so in love with
//it is not a "native" name when it is a juxtaposition of english letters and does not translate to anything from the supposed country/tribe/language you got it from
///kid born in America should not have to explain his/her mother was an idiot when someone asks his/her name

That was about Martin Luther, this German guy who pinned a note on a church door saying, "Hang on a minute!" But in German, so, "Ein minuten bitte!"
