(Sun Sentinel)   One man is going on-strike for "Middle Child Day," which is designed to get middle children all the "respect and attention they deserve." Naturally, he's being ignored   (sun-sentinel.com) divider line 56

As an adult I can pretty much proclaim that *every* day is middle-child day. And oldest child day. And the baby of the family day...

I can't wait for the Hallmark card that says "Happy Middle Child's Day" and then you open it up and it says "Sucks to be you."

Look, middle children fall into two categories: (1) oopsie!, or (2) we need a self-propelled toy for the child we actually love.  IF they can't accept that their life is meaningless outside their elder sibling, I suggest suicide

To all middle children: you were the baby at some point; you got your attention. Now put on your big-boy panties and get the f*ck over it.

Not really, any child who is neither the oldest nor the youngest can just be lumped together as middle child.

They can have their whiny day if they'll also take the impossible, inflated expectations we oldests get stuck with.

I was the oldest, my younger brother was middle kid. He got all the benefits of having parents that didn't try to experiment on him for everything. He was allowed to get away with all the shiat that would get my ass beat. Now, he's the "success" and the family favorite, while I'm pretty much considered the family farkup. The youngest brother was the punk asshole that would run up to me or my brother and punch us in the nuts and if we retaliated, would then scream that we were beating him up, getting us in trouble. He was also a total coward when it came to being in a schoolyard fight.

Boo hoo.

Nope, the middle kid isn't the one that gets ignored, he is the one that is allowed permission where the older sibling is the science experiment and considered responsible for everything, even when he's not in the house.

Middle here.

When young, "mommy my brother is teasing me"
"learn to live with it"

Couple years later "my brother hit me for teasing him better than he could tease me"
"don't tease your brother"

In my thirties now, and it still works pretty much like this :)
I can take shiat and dish it, but he can't. I think I won.

ThatGuyFromTheInternet: They can have their whiny day if they'll also take the impossible, inflated expectations we oldests get stuck with.

Absolutely this.

"Not learning algebra? We're going to scream at you and each other and insist that it is your problem and nothing to do with the method by which we communicate. But we are going to hire tutors for the younger kids because we learned how not to do things with you. You were a born farkup anyway."

Shouldn't Middle Child day be on a Thursday? Maybe Thursday, the fifteenth? Or at least the second of July?

I spent my whole childhood tracking what priviledges my older got at what age, then asking for them at said age and getting told 'we were wrong then, you cannot have/do x'

Every family is different :)

My older brother is the golden child, I'm the neglected middle child, my sister is the pain in the ass. Made sure to forward this to mom.

Middle child here.  Grow the fark up and get over yourself.  Jeez.

2013-08-11 07:13:08 PM
Let's see. The oldest of my siblings is the golden child (he's the only one willing to give mom grandkids), the youngest has already been to jail, and I'm the only one who graduated college. I can't say I'm doing too badly.

2013-08-11 07:15:26 PM
I'm the youngest. What does that make me?

2013-08-11 07:16:00 PM
I always thought that being the middle child was the best position to be in.  Until my late teens, I got to do pretty much what I wanted while my parent's attention went to putting pressure on my older brother and fussing over my kid sister. That was the perfect setup. When I did well at something I knew how to attract attention and compliments. If I didn't do well, nobody paid too much attention to it.   Until my brother moved out of the house, my parents really only noticed my successes.

Is there an issue with middle children?

[anecdotal evidence]

I'm a "middle" and never known this, at least not in my own life.

If you were from my family, that would make you the one mom and dad actually wanted.

2013-08-11 07:47:05 PM
I'm the oldest, and I kind of wish I'd have been middle or at least youngest.  Being the one being doted on didn't suit my personality at all.  Also my dad had this farked up patriarchial primogentiturical worldview and wouldn't let my brothers do anything unless I did it first, so I ended up being guilted into doing all kinds of crap I didn't want to do and/or being considered an asshole for not going along.

2013-08-11 07:50:29 PM
I'm the oldest by almost five years, and my not turning out perfect hasn't always gone over well.  My brother, the middle one, has given mom three grandkids...and is probably responsible for at least half the headaches she had in the past thirty two years, because when he wasn't going to the ER eighteen times before he turned 20, he was/is just generally being a dick.  My sister, the youngest, is the princess, but she's also the one I'm most likely to hang out with, because she and her husband are normal.

\currently my brother is breaking an unwritten rule of parenting by trying to get rid of one of his dogs that he doesn't have time for anymore
\\he's also trying to move out of his house, because he wants to live somewhere where the grass is greener, though I'm sure that won't last either
\\\mostly because he'll realize mom won't drive half an hour just to babysit at the drop of a hat, and moving that much further away from his job isn't a smart idea either

Your brother only went to the ER 18 times in 20 years and your mom was freaked out about that?

My college best friend had the unenviable role of oldest daughter in a Chinese American family.  In some cultures, first daughter often means "third parent" and "flawless role model."  Though her parents were not extreme tiger parents and they never mistreated her, she had a lot of self-esteem problems from the pressure her first daughter status put on her.

I was the first born, but my sister is the responsible achiever in my family, probably to make up for my passive and codependent personality.

My wife's a middle, and her family have been doing this since way before me.  Who doesn't like an extra reason for lobster and cake?
