alaric3: Define people.

Hey, I tell you what is. Big city, hmm? Live, work, huh? But not city only. Only peoples. Peoples is peoples. No is buildings. Is tomatoes, huh? Is peoples, is dancing, is music, is potatoes. So, peoples is peoples. Okay?

It's almost as if irrational things like brand loyalty and aggressive marketing trump rational decisions in the marketplace.

There's another explanation they teach in econ:

People want sweet, but they don't want it over a long-period of time. Give people free Pepsi and Coke, and they'll drink Pepsi at first but switch to Coke because Pepsi is TOO sweet to drink constantly.

2013-08-09 03:11:39 PM
Why do they even bother with blind taste tests. Most people can tell the difference between coke and Pepsi without being told which is which.

/BTW both are inferior to Dr Pepper.

I have to agree with this.  I like Pepsi in smaller doses but it gets overwhelming.

I took the Pepsi Challenge at a local event back in the 1980s...they gave out crackers to eat between tastings. I chose the cold drink over the lukewarm one. The cold drink was Pepsi.

/prefers Coca Cola

I think I know why Pepsi wins their "blind" taste tests.  They held one in the mall I worked at in high school, if you picked Pepsi, you got a free shirt, if you picked Coke, no shirt.  Want to guess which one most people picked?

Pepsi was originally marketed as the black folks alternative to Coca-Cola. Obviously this must have been before purple drank was invented.

2013-08-09 04:37:54 PM
when New Coke came out, a group of friends tried a blind taste test -- new coke, old coke (this was well before "classic" was relaunched), pepsi, RC, and one or two others.  heck, i think we had Jolt in the line-up.

the overall winner was the local supermarket generic.  go figure.

You know what?  Deep down, I don't think most people care.  If you're in a restaurant and order Coke, have you ever decided not to have soda if they were a Pepsi place?  No... because the difference just isn't that dramatic.

Even grocery shopping, I know a lot of people who just buy whichever brand is on sale that week.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of the difference in Coke's revenue vs. Pepsi's came down to venue contracts.

Came here to say THIS.

And as an addendum, to all the Dr. Pepper fans out there, the reason Dr. Pepper isn't included in these comparisons is because it isn't in the same class. Dr. Pepper isn't a cola. Damn good, but not a cola.

Here's what I want:

A real sugar Mexican Coke, with the exact same formula only:
50% of the sugar.

I would kill a man to try such a coke.  I love the flavor, but I can't drink a whole bottle (the sweetness becomes cloying)

Coke has a much more robust flavor that is enjoyable.  Pepsi tastes like hummingbird feeder fluid.

I rarely drink soda (they're all too sweet), but the very reason I prefer Pepsi over Coke is that Coke is much sweeter. Either I taste something that most people don't, or most people taste something I don't.

/I suspect that I actually just taste something bitter in Pepsi, which merely counteracts the sweetness
