What's wrong with Detroit Free Press links?  Are you confusing this with "freepers"?

Not the first time people made that mistake.

Not sure it's accurate to use the word "think" in reference to Free Republic.

fst_creeper: SordidEuphemism: this taboo against touching human remains is difficult to fathom.

Aspbergers by chance? (Not a snark, I'm borderline and my son high functioning autistic)

When your were in college or college age did you ever reach in the fridge one night with the lights off and come up against something slimy or gooey that you initially hope is cream cheese or something like it but once you turn the lights on you find out it is something rancid and nasty, mold covered and foul?  This is like that only it not "My dumb ass room mates 3 week old Limburger and avocado sandwich that he was too lazy tho throw out", it turns out it is "Steve."   It's not disease that makes your want to hurl and wash your skin off, it's texture, expectations and running up against something most would consider nasty.  Your occupational exposure helps you but I bet the sandwich would put you a little off no?

Not so CSB : God I wish the reference sandwich was made up. I was in the service at the time and have been in the field for a few weeks. He woke up snuggled up to it.  We had "words."  He learned to throw his shiat out. The smell hit just after the texture.  I had a sinus infection but it managed to cut right through.

Aspbergers? I doubt it, but anything's possible. I can understand the 'surprise' factor, but I wasn't talking about the shock of finding a skull in your hands when you expected food -- that'd result in a visceral reaction, for sure -- just the reactions in the thread about human remains in general.

Of course, I've always been far too curious for my own good. Maybe this is a symptom of that. I'm less prone to think 'ew, that's weird/gross, let's avoid it' and more likely to think 'hey, that's weird/gross, let's get a closer look'.

Also, that area is hardly "redneck country" anymore, as most of the people who live there are ex-suburbanites who fled the Detroit 'burbs 10-15 years ago. The rednecks moved further north to the Sandusky and North Branch areas.
