What's wrong with Detroit Free Press links?  Are you confusing this with "freepers"?

this is a fear of mine, hiking around minding my own business and stumbling onto human remains. Or having my dog bring back human remains.

It looks like some kind of trauma, but if it was a gunshot exit wound, I'd expect to see a mosaic fracture with radiating fissures.  Looks more like a hammer blow to me.  Hard to tell from that one picture though.  Gyrfalcon will probably know.

Not sure it's accurate to use the word "think" in reference to Free Republic.

Yeah...not a lot of "thinking" going on at FreeRepublic.

Been banned there for asking questions, lol...

This is not at all where I thought this story was going to go based on Subby's headline.  Most flagrant case of false advertising since Stoner's Pot Palace.

Our keen observation and deductive-reasoning skills are wasted in our current professions.

I have no opinion (haven't visited for years) but I always find it funny when people won't click on an opposing website as if they're avoiding contamination or something.  Same with the people who went to the trouble to get those cable signal filters to make sure they'd never see Fox News--even by accident while playing flip the channel.  Get a grip.

Grandpa???  Grandpa, is that you??  What's that hole in the side of your head? You know maw's  been lookin' for you for a good long time now. She always said you'd come home. And what's with that big fishhook? Gosh darn it, Grandpa, it looks like you've gone and lost your dentures again.

Could be a Native American skeleton.  Which means things may get complicated for the coroner or whoever gets the bones.

Not really, if that is the case, once the identification and age of the bones is made they will just turn them over to a tribe.  No grounds were disturbed they were found under a log in the lake.

Hmm, I don't understand that reference. I think I'll Google it.

oi_piss_me_off: this is a fear of mine, hiking around minding my own business and stumbling onto human remains. Or having my dog bring back human remains.

Back when I worked for the local history museum, I was helping with some cataloging in the archives and found some ashes and bone fragments (including teeth and most of the intact lower jaw) in a piece of native american pottery that had been previously cataloged as a food container but was actually a funerary urn. Bodies tend to show up in the darndest places.

/Repatriating the remains back to the tribe they came from was a nightmare.

I let you keep the femur, but now, now I want my skull. Or perhaps, I might just take yours. Hans!

I think the point is to deprive them of some (admittedly extremely minuscule) ad revenue.

2013-08-09 04:15:36 PM
It's a female skeleton, you can tell from the pelvis. Also it might not be old. I'd like to see if that hole in the skull was postmortem too (it doesn't look it from the picture). The bones also look charred. Could be a murder victim, burned the body, took what was left and threw it in the lake.

Some of the tribes from around there are just flat-out gone, like the Huron.  Not sure how that's handled in that case.  Nearest reservation or some other way?

FTFA:  A dive team found other bones in water that was three to four feet deep

They called in a dive team for four-foot-deep water?  Tax dollars at work.
