Bah, they all do steroids and beat their wives with telephones.  Could be the pitching, though.

2013-08-09 01:12:41 PM
I just hope that's what we're saying in November.  They're on a great run and they've separated themselves from the rest of the Central Division.  The starting pitching probably the best in baseball, Verlander appears to be back in form, they're near the top in runs and average, the bullpen is shaping up...I just hope this isn't the Tigers peaking early

I'm a White Sox fan so I'm really getting a kick out of the last two threads being about the Tigers and the Cubs. In the crotch.

Gosh, it was really tough seeing the Indians' fans hearts broken like that the last four days, especially the 14-inning game.

And by tough, I mean soul-warming and delicious.

I'll enjoy it if they get swept out of the World Series again. But I'll give them props if they win it all too. Either way I will still hate them.

At least Raburn was lights out when he pitched last night.  I know last night must have been tough to watch for you, but that was awesome.  Even if my guys did go down 1-2-3 to him.

My favorite that I'm surprised didn't make fark was Cleveland chants Detroit is bankrupt, tigers respond by making them stay for six extra beer less innings before beating them

It's one of the rare trades that worked out for both (yeah yeah, the Snakes were part of that trade too, but we're not talking about them) sides. It's a shame Granderson felt the need to wear baseball magnet wristbands this year.

Makes sense given the offseason not quite decimation but pretty close of the stihler's roster, but yeah. That's pretty weird. I wouldn't be able to remember September was coming without someone holding up 6 fingers as they walked by my office.

He's no Casper Wells though.  Casper Wells: America's 5th Outfielder/13th Pitcher.

BTW, DFA'd by Philly in order to pick up Wells: Delmon Young.

Wells moved again?  How many teams have rejected this guy in one year?  What's the record for uniforms worn in a season?

This is his 5th organization this year.  Seattle -> Toronto -> Oakland -> Chicago -> Philly.  Guess after a tour of the American League divisions it was time to give the National League a look.

Yeah, I went and looked it up, and it appears Wells never made it into a regular-season, major-league game with either Seattle or Toronto.  So Philly will be his third major league team of the season, which isn't all that unusual.  (I didn't find anything definitive, but some folks around the Internet have said the record for MLB teams in a season is four, held by a number of players including Dave Kingman in 1977.)  Still, five organizations in four months for the peripatetic Wells.  Wow.  And the season isn't over.

Huh.  Well, if you can count teams you never played for (and why not, it's a Friday), then Wells just tied him.  With over a month and a half to go.

Oakland purchased him on April 22 and sold him one week later, on April 29.  Knowing Billy Beane, the A's probably pocketed a $50,000 profit that will just enable them to get some other guy's contract under their budget this offseason.

There is no clear best team in baseball right now, that's why this season has been fun. Well except for ESPN's 12 month coverage of football in the new teen gossip format, choking out any actual coverage of MLB.

Their record was less than expected.  The bullpen was the cause of much of the problems in the first half of the season.  Hopefully they have that ironed out now.

(Granted, he didn't actually play at all for Seattle or Toronto).  Still... that's gotta be a record.

I mean, it's... positively correlated with defensive skill, more so than it isn't?  I'm pretty sure?

Actually, I meant to ask you (or someone else who knows these things) a defensive metrics question.  Know if advanced metrics account for outfield position?  Eric Young's defensive numbers kinda suck, both according to BR and Fangraphs.  While he's kinda iffy for his speed, he still has to be at least a slightly above average LF.  Are his numbers bad because that's comparing to CFs, or because almost no LF makes more than a little difference anyway (other than Lucas Duda), or some combination of those things?

The Tigers weren't sure who to close, so they went by committee for a while.  It took like a month for them to realize Benoit was the only guy getting hitters out, so they made him the closer, and he did a good job.

Then they brought Valverde back for no good reason, and gave him the job for a month or two.  Then, finally, they realized that hey, that Benoit guy's the only one who is getting people out, and put him back into the role.

In short, the Tigers are kind of a bunch of clowns.
