Meh, big deal.  The residents of San Francisco have been camping for decades.

2013-08-09 11:51:56 AM
The people in those tents are also too damn high.

Lock them all on a rooftop with a black bear....  There's your REAL camping experience biatches.

I prefer my hobo caves under the subway lines, better orgies there

Meanwhile, cities such as Chicago, New York, Houston, and San Francisco have established urban camping programs, often geared toward families or neighborhood youths.

Funny how they didn't like it when these people decided to camp.

I think that's called "being homeless".

That looks kinda fun, but I don't see how it's possible to have a camp fire, unless it's in a steal drum, and there's no way you're gonna see a single star in any big city.

"It was a time to socialize and look at the stars," says 24-year-old Ariel Abrahams, describing a recent camping trip. He talks about "the rush of the water from the creek, the chirping of birds," and the trees standing close around him.

The hitch? Those natural sights and sounds were only in Abrahams' imagination. His tent was actually pitched atop a Brooklyn warehouse. He's a dumb piece of shiat.

Hipsters, is there anything they can't co-opt without stripping it of all of its meaning so it's nothing more than a hollow shell of an idea that they can then fill with ironicness?

I have a friend who lives in a parking lot.  He prefers to call himself an 'Urban Camper.'  His plan is usually to get arrested in February for a month.  "With my luck, I'll get released in a storm."

It's ironic that this is a thread full of people hating on other people for not camping authentically.

Sounds pretty hipster.

I camped for two weeks just blocks away from bustling downtown Edmonton. There's a little path where 124th street turns ito Jasper avenue, goes down into the valley. Pitched a tent there for two weeks. Charged phone at parks, bathed in legislature wading pool, brushed teeth etc in public bathrooms.

Sadly, "urban camping" isn't confined to the city.  Last time I went camping in the woods, some big family set up next to my tent and hauled in all kinds of inflatable tents, generators, spotlights, etc.  They basically recreated urban/suburban living in the wilderness.  I don't understand the point.  The campsite wouldn't make them shut it down, either, even though generators were against their rules.  With all the noise, was like camping next to a motorcycle.   Ruined the whole experience for me.

Something I have never understood about living in Alaska - All the damn Wal-Mart campers.

People drive these massive RV's up the Alcan just to camp out in the middle of a parking lot in Anchorage?  And it isn't like a rest stop for them, they will actually spend a week there and then drive back home.  What is the point?

There are only 2 roads out of Anchorage.  Point yourself either North or South and go see something other than asphalt...

Umm..Speaking as someone who was too lazy to make Eagle Scout, there are plenty of mentally unstable Scouts, that is where the civic minded Pyromaniacs end up.

Don't you have a goal in life other than cheering a company arbitrarily firing 10,000 employees to "save money", and then later putting down those same employees for "being lazy" because they can't find a job?
