Researchers findings: Smart women don't have children.

Researcher's conclusion: Smart women are dumb losers because they don't want to spend their lives barefoot and pregnant.

What is this I don't even

To be fair, if idiocracy is even remotely accurate, the best way to prevent it is for intelligent women to, with malice aforethought, turn their vaginas into clown cars.

*golf clap* to Subby for a spiffy headline!

As for the urge bit, I don't think it's an urge thing personally. Women with higher IQs realize they have more opinions than just getting married and/or having kids. I also know many women who are smarter than I am who have had kids. But, then maybe I'd better stop here before I put my foot in my mouth and get snarky comebacks on my previous sentence.

it's a tricky one. im smart (i r smrt) and i don't want kids. a lot of my friends, who are also smart (by which i mean educated and professional) also don't want kids.

there was an expectation i would go to university. if you're poor and uneducated, there's an expectation you'll have kids. i don't know how many poor uneducated women have kids with a vague feeling that perhaps they don't want to, as I don't really know any well. they may well not so much want kids, but get pregnant, because they're not educated about contraception, or careless. id imagine abortion being an option is more likely the more educated you are, although there arent really religious concerns in this country

Wow - until i realized that the researcher is Japanese, i was pretty shocked at the thesis that women who are smart are just delusional "losers" because they aren't getting knocked up.

Yeah, I get this a lot from my coworkers.  The trick is to be funny and nice in your response.  These are people I see every day--I want a happy working environment, ffs.

I've heard it so many times that it doesn't even annoy me anymore.

Those making the argumentative about this running counter to evolution should spend some time researching r and K reproductive strategies. The higher IQ women probably on average spend a lot more time, money, and energy on raising each individual child.

2013-08-09 09:38:57 AM
The problem with procreation is that the people least suitable to beparents are the most likely to become them.

If you're smart, successful, ie have proven genetic value: please, oh PLEASE, have kids.  There's far too many dumb farks propagating their genes, the world will trend stupider if the smart ones don't at least try to compete!

It's not.  The trend of richer, smarter, more educated people having fewer children than the huddled masses has been going on for several generations now while IQ has been increasing.

Why do people care so much about how many kids people decide to have, ESPECIALLY when they appear to love them and can financially support them without government handouts?

I'm not extremely intelligent but I decided young that I didn't want kids. I felt there were too many and that I'd rather adopt when I had the money. Well, life is a trickster and I ended up pregnant at 23.  Keeping my son was the greatest decision I've ever made. Still, I don't want anymore children.  I am currently working on my Masters and when I am finally making money I want to use it to better our lives. I don't want my son to ever go without but I'm also against spoiling him. Anyways, I know a lot of people who continue to have children with less money than me, which is hard to believe, I am a student, but they continue and I honestly question what type of life they will be able to provide for their children. But, I also have to step back and realize that maybe a big family is more important to them than being able to send their children to private schools and being able to afford their college educations one day.
/No idea why I wrote all of that.... too much coffee, perhaps?

IQ inflation & improvements in education & nutrition can explain this trend.

I'm not very bright or financially secure. These are the very reasons I will not have children. I'm fairly certain these are not selfish reasons and so I call B.S. on Asian mans theories.

2013-08-09 09:45:57 AM
Well sure.   If you are dumb as a box of rocks, as soon as your body starts to fall apart, dudes see less reason to hang around, especially if you
think your job is secure and you don't need to do your tasks.   So you start popping out rugrats that will need you and you will feel like
you accomplished something.

If you stay in school, and are pleasant to talk to, men seek you out.

2013-08-09 09:46:23 AM
Well that explains why I feel dumber as I get older, and in the past few years I suddenly am open to the idea of having kids. Sometimes I'll see a baby and think "I want one.."
I still would not have a baby for the sake of having a baby though. I'd rather have a husband.

2013-08-09 09:46:26 AM
"it seems that this research is just adding fuel to the argument that women who don't have, regardless of the reason, are not just selfish losers but dumb ones as well."

Huh? With world population over 7 billion and vital resources such as fresh water running out I would think that not producing more parasitic consumers, particularly in the first world, would be the smart thing to do. It's not like humans are going to go extinct any time soon.

Deep Contact: They may not want them young, but when that clock is ticking.......

Kinda wondering about this as well. I'm not surprised if smarter younger women are less likely to want children in their teens and 20s.

But my personal anecdotal evidence would suggest in their 30s (particularly late 30s) even smart women start to get a little wistful about having a baby. Sometimes even if they already have kids (hi honey!). Biological clock ticking and all that. Not to say there arent plenty of smart women who never want kids, but some women who think they don't want kids may feel the urge as they get older.

But whatever. There's no shortage of people, if you don't want kids don't have them.

We have a generation raised on instant gratification being taught to avoid responsibility and we are surprised that some avoid the ultimate responsibility?  Also, most of the career-minded women of childbearing age that I know do not want to compromise on a mate, they report a serious lack of educated men who have both manners and their own income.  Whether the economy or something else is responsible, there is a current glut of live-at-home, have-no-job, play-video-games-all-day guys who have no desire or means to pay for children.  If we want to see more educated people having kids maybe we just need to find better ways to bring them together (especially given the plethora of horror stories from most online dating websites)?

2013-08-09 09:49:50 AM
When people at work asked me why I don't have kids I simply say that my husband and I didn't want kids. We got a dog instead.
They just stare at me and then go off with the other women talking about their kid's football practice or whatever.

IIRC in Brave New World, where all reproduction was controlled by the government, this was done on purpose. You want more dumb people than smart people.  Embryos were altered to produce the desired intelligence distribution with just a few Alpha, more Betas, even more Gammas, etc.  A society of only Alphas would be a disaster.

She was just too poor for a television.   She could not watch L'Oprah during the day.  That wasn't a novel, either.  It was a cookbook with a book cover for a novel.  Biffette was just thinking about what to prepare for her man for dinner.
