The 360 has required xbox live forever.  Is this shocking to anyone?  It would be news if it didn't need this.

If you're paying $60/year for Xbox Live gold, you deserve to pay $60.

2013-08-09 07:51:58 AM
On either system you will be playing for a multiplayer experience this gen.  Yes MS is going to leave those things that have been behind gold where they were and PS has some free to play exceptions.  Yes, base price is 60 XB1, vs 50 for PS4 but MS has long offered ways to not pay full price for their year subscriptions.  No one should be paying for Live gold just to stream Netflix since there are now so many devices that will do it.  If you are paying for gold for your multiplayer fix, Netflix access is just one of the things that come with it.  If you never want to play multiplayer then the PS4 will provide more value.  Beyond that, it at least becomes debatable.  This is a non-story.

I'll probably get both eventually, but this idea that  either system is going to have poor sales is just silly.  Both have reported extraordinary pre-orders.

You know what's farked up?

XBL had been charging for premium access since, literally, it's first day. Sony fanbois have always lorded the fact than playing online multiplayer on PSN is available to free subscribers. Well, not anymore - online multiplayer for the PS4 will require a PSN+ subscription.

Yet somehow, this story has become about MS DOING EVIL THINGS, when in reality it is using the same payment model has always used, while Sony is now forcing millions of people to pay for multiplayer when it was previously free to everyone.

How the fark does that work?

To be fair, I've never paid $60 for Gold either. Hell Amazon had a sale up for $30 not too long ago. I ended up buying two (yes, for $60), but that covered 2 years of it.

Yes, however...

I think that it is a bunch of horseshiat that you should have to pay $60 a year to access say...Netflix, when my BluRay, Wii, Roku, etc. all do it without a recurring yearly subscription.

I wish they would create a "family" style account where one can access entertainment, and not allow for the online, multi-player stuff.  The wife and I have an Xbox and pay for one Gold Live Account, but they only thing we use it for is streaming shows - Netflix, HBO Go, etc.

We are not hardcore gamers, and if the intent of MSFT is to capture monies from serious gamers, then I think that they are alienating those who occasionally game, but use their console for TV/Movie entertainment more than anything else.

In Xbro news, Summer of Arcade just kicked off with Brothers: A Story of Two Sons.

Horrendously generic title aside, it's a fun little game. I wish the puzzles were more frequent/more difficult, but its a gorgeous little game.

Bonus: it's a darkly moving story about death and loss than manages to be effective despite the fact that all of the characters speak a fictional language, and there are no subtitles.

Hmm interesting. I saw the ad for it, but didn't give it a second thought. I'll check that out tonight.

Hell I just discovered Crackdown (free on XBL right now). That's a pretty fun game too, even for being 6 years old. Although it being free probably helped add to the fun.

I think it's an idiot tax for some people. I've heard a few people say they've pre-ordered an Xbone to use as a Netflix streaming device because they thought they might like to have games for when people are over.

I don't mind things like online multiplayer being behind the Live paywall, but it is incredibly annoying when they put OTHER company's services behind the pay wall, and it is downright insane that you have to pay for Live to even pop open the web browser. Microsoft just comes off as annoying because they want to monetize things to the point where I feel like I'm getting nickle and dimed on things like this and the play and charge kits.

To be fair, there's plenty of things you can do without a gold membership, like see what your friends are playing without you, and get spammed with ads.

1.  Turn on console
2.  Insert Game
3. Play

That is all I want out of a console.  I don't care what extra features it has, as long as it doesn't interfere or add a step to the process listed above, I will be happy.

I'm more concerned about the news that PS4 will require Playstation Plus for online gaming. NOT because it costs money, but because it is an AWESOME premium service now. The free games alone are worth the price of admission.

Under the new model, there is enough incentive for everyone to pay that I fear that the cool stuff will be dialed down or moved to a "super premium" tier.

It's almost like Just Cause 2, just lacking in the vehicles and grapple-hook category. I'm having a blast on it though.

Yea I thought about Crackdown 2, but then I read they literally recycled the exact same map, they just made it more trashy and rundown.

Furthermore, it's not like they're charging you for water when you need to take life-saving medication at a restaurant. Microsoft's offering a gaming service.

I'm amazed at how much people whine about gaming being expensive. Of course it is. You're sitting around accomplishing nothing. I'm for that as much as the next guy at times, but $60/year is, quite frankly, insignificant, especially compared to the lost productivity of gaming.

As I've heard from qualified voices, Crackdown 2 takes place in the same venue as the first game but pretty much does everything else worse than the original game.  However, I concur with you guys that the first game is damn filthy awesome, and represents the direction the genre should have gone in following Grand Theft Auto III.

I read it's because Sony is bringing the MP servers in-house for PS4, a la XBL, in an effort to provide better related services. I don't see a problem with that.

Why should you need gold to use skype to make calls? Or record single player gaming for that matter....

I guess the same reason you need gold to be able to watch netflix? It is a stupid system that you can't defend without sounding like an xbox cheerleader.

It isn't really expensive but it makes the argument that "consoles are much cheaper than PC" even harder to make. Once you factor in the cost of 5-10 games and 7 years of online service the difference is negligible.

To be fair, you only needed to pay the fee if you wanted to do multiplayer gaming or stream Netflix (which is farking stupid btw). Xbox Live Silver was always free, but it only gave you access to the store and downloading demos and shiat.

Anyone know if the Xbone will still offer a free Silver Live tier?

Looks like now they might be trying for a third one.

But, unless they put it on PC, I don't think I will play it.  I think I might just skip this generation of consoles and put the focus back on my PC (at least for a couple of years).  I have a large library of games that I would like to get back into, and with GOG and Steam releasing older games I think i might just wallow in nostalgia for awhile.

Lets be honest between steam sales and The Elder Scrolls Online you'd never want for anything to play. With Steam big picture it works better than consoles are likely to anyway.

I totally get MS and Sony charging to run multi-player services and the cost per year isn't too onerous especially since you can find it cheap/on sale elsewhere.

The thing I'm not fond of is that fact that when a game gets old they might start shutting down services they feel aren't worth keeping. This means I might not even be able to play single-player (much less multi-player) on a game I paid for and pay a subscription to keep running.

Why wouldn't you be able to play single-player?

Sure they might shut down multiplayer servers on very old games. But that can still take a long time. Halo 3 servers are still up and that was released in 2007.

Yup, I have a PS3, but the charge for multiplayer and the lack of backwards compatibility for both systems is what finally did me in. Couple of weeks ago I threw up my hands and built my first ever gaming PC (my build if anyone wants to kick silicon in my face at the beach for not buying the right shiat).

Cost $750, but the Steam Sale was going on at the time, and I bought enough that I'm happy to say I actually saved a over even what used copies of the same games would have cost on a console.
