Congress has made it clear that no progress will be made on anything, ever.  He should just hang it up and go on vacation until they get their act together.

Biden is an idiot. That said, I just love the guy.

I'm not sure if I love Biden, or *Streisand voice* the idea of Biden,

and I don't really care.

Soon enough we're going to have some stuffy ass way-too-serious stick in the mud that replaces him.  Or worse yet, another sociopath puppet of Satan like Cheney. (or is Satan Cheney's puppet? Huh? Hmmmmm?)

Joe Biden is a big fuggin deal,
so just go outside and fire a few shotgun blasts off into the air and enjoy him while we have him :)

2013-08-09 08:49:47 AM
Oh goodie.  Now this is where the frivolous back-and-fourth crap can begin.  First we're going to need a Fark Conservative to crack jokes about Obama's 4238 golf games played during his presidency, then Fark Libs will counter with the Corona Beer Bottle "Days on Vacation" graphic which shows Bush having a lot more vacation days.

Sooner or later someone will pull up the ever-popular "This is costing the taxpayers $17 bazillionty for SS protection alone!"  Countered with "you'd rather have POTUS have no protection?!"  Then some stats on the Prez's limo somewhere, and eventually it'll come around to Pelosi's bar tab on her flights.

Some of these things could simply be copied/pasted from one day to the next.

Obama should have bought up Bush's ranch when it went up for sale. The Right would have had to spin so badly about how a week's vacation there was bad that they could have been used as an alternative energy source for the entire eastern seaboard.

One thing I learned from checking out the link: That is one shiat-rag (re)publication. supposedly my computer blocks pop-ups, but somehow this shiat-rag managed to squeeze three of them in during the 45 seconds I stayed on the site trying to discern if there was anything more to the story than the First Family taking a fairly short vacation in a place that could be reasonably secured. I would imagine that anywhere the 1st FotUS is going to stay over night  is going to cost in the  multi millions. I remember Darth Cheney staying in JackHole, and the SS pretty much took over the entire region.

Reminds me of my impression of Bush Jr right before 9/11, the man had been on vacation almost 100 days of his first year of presidency, as much as I didn't care for the guy I was getting the feeling that anyone willing to coast through 40% of his term would end up having very little impact during his post and would be voted out as a one-termer like his daddy.  Just ignore him and he'll drop out after the first semester.  Then 9/11 happened and forced him to cram for the courses he'd previously been sleeping through.

For those of you who say that presidents are never on vacation... Bush Jr was effectively incommunicado during the entire month of August 2011, from the 9/11 investigation it was clear he took part in few if any meetings or briefings with his administration, he told them all to go away that he'd be back on September 3rd.

I know right.  Obama should have had the good sense to be born to an old money family from the Northeast whose long business contacts would have enabled him to have a big ranch all his own where he could have a simple vacation of clearing brush. Just another example of how uppity our vacationer/golfer in chief really is.

And for those who think the president is always working, that's semi-true, but why didn't Bush read the Aug. 6, 2001 memo from the FBI?  Answer: see graphic above.

This puts the money into perspective:

Republicans argue that Bush's vacations were cheaper because many of them were taken at his ranch in Crawford, TX, but this is not true. President Bush spent more taxpayer money on a single flight to Crawford ($805,000) than Obama will be spending on 70 hotel rooms for a week ($181,125). The flight from the White House to Crawford is 1,435.8 miles each way. The distance from the White House to Martha's Vineyard is 494.8 miles. The flight to Martha's Vineyard is 75 minutes. The cost of Obama's flight should be $214,000 each way. What Bush may have gained by owning the ranch was offset by the fact that his flight was three times longer. Obama's hotel and flight still cost a little less than half as much as one Bush flight to Crawford.

President Bush also inflated his vacation costs, because he rarely just flew to Crawford and back. The Bush administration tried to combat criticism of the then president's constant vacationing, by setting up a series of day trips on each vacation. President Bush's "working vacations" cost taxpayers a small fortune, because he used Air Force One as his personal taxi service to make trips all across the country, and returned to Crawford at night.

Obama on vacation = I dunno, but less gooder than him presidenting = Not as good an idea. Therefore more Obama vacation days are bad.

I think the government should start using money to help people relocate for jobs. It's not unprecedented in American history. Help people find a job and give them relocation money if a job in their field is open in another city or state.

Ah, the difference is that when Bush took vacations - over double the amount that Obama has - the outrage was over the fact that he was taking so much vacation time.  There was no real outrage over the cost, just the fact that the guy seemed to be permanently on vacation.

Obama's critics keep bringing up cost, conveniently ignoring the fact that Bush spent just as much.

I think this line of reasoning is crap.

Yes, in matters of a crisis, both had access.  But that doesn't mean they are working during their vacations, it just means they CAN do anything they need to during the vacation.

So, it goes back to:  who took the most vacations?

Answer: the guy pulling a rank of about 33rd in the "Best President in U.S. History" list.

They are trying to get the wrong sort of white people to riot.  Have you ever tried to riot in a Hoverround?  Do you think you can muster a successful riot if you can't even spell "informed" or "dissent" correctly?

No, our best chances for white rioting were quelled by pepper spray and reports of police car defecation.

Of course it does, and no he is not.  It isn't even THAT far from DC.  And on any other day I wouldn't have that big of a problem with it. Heck, I've argued your point.  It's just that we just closed our embassy in freaking Lahore.  There is some kind of weird balloon going up right now, and it's a good time for the POTUS to be ready to swing into action and not be conducting business by skype or whatever.

Meh, if Martha's Vineyard is about 450 miles from the White House, then its about 4 hours away door to door via a Marine One helo if all hell breaks loose. (going by the stats on wiki for a Sea King).

Dude, who needs to be in DC? Modern communications tech allows a command post to be set up anywhere. It's not like he needs to be in a physical location to receive reports about any crises anywhere in the world. Being in DC is just a convenience for those old guys from southern states who can't quite grasp modern tech, like cell phones and satellite communication.

Mikey1969: This puts the money into perspective:

President Bush's "working vacations" cost taxpayers a small fortune, because he used Air Force One as his personal taxi service to make trips all across the country, and returned to Crawford at night.

http://www.politicususa.com/2013/07/30/bush-spent-1-flight-crawford- ob amas-entire-week-vacation-hotel-rooms.html

Any BushBabies out there to "prove" everything wrong?

With airplanes, the relationship between distance traveled and cost isn't exactly linear.

And just to clarify before the "HURR DERR You defend Obummer blindly!" brigade chimes in, I don't LIKE the choice, I don't SUPPORT the choice, but I UNDERSTAND the choice unlike folks such as you who have never had to make a choice like that.  And then they say "well if I was president....".  Just STFU right there, bucko.  If you were president, you'd have A LOT more intel to work with, a lot more data, and harder decisions.  You can't say "If i were president" and pretend you'd be working with the same outsider perspective and you'd " do the right" thing.

You can however say "If I were president, maybe I wouldn't be such an asshole and start a war for no god damn reason based on almost no evidence because that is a f*cking evil, greedy thing to do" and then I'd believe you.

Biden has my fullest confidence. It's Silly Season. If anything silly needs saying, I have complete faith in his ability to say it.

Barring the kind of disaster that would recall the First Family from their August vacation in Martha's Vineyard, Biden is good enough and smart enough, and dammit, some people like him.

Let's face it. Being a kindly but dumb uncle who says some stupid things but means well is within his grasp. He's no FDR, but on the other hand, he's no FDR.

FDR was a bit of a dick sometimes, and so is Biden, but Biden is a nicer guy, if less intelligent and politically savey and I suspect that we ought to cut him enough slack to let him get on with his job of not being a threat the President of the United States and of standing in the way of Republicans who would kill the President to put themselves or one of their own stooges in the office. That, in the deciding vote in event of a tie in the Senate, is his job, and he's doing the best he can while the Boss is away deciding whether he should take advantage of the week off to start a mustache and a goatee.

He shouldn't. I don't think a mustache would look good on him, and the goatee would lead to conspiracy theories about him being replace by an Even More Evil Twin.

A few years ago I was out on Nantucket Sound fishing with my Father in his 18 foot flats boat.  It was the Summer and we were going after Stripers and Blues with fly rods.  It was mostly "run and gun" looking for blitzes which can be tough but considering my Father being diagnosed with Lyme disease a few weeks earlier we were mostly just happy to get out.

The meds he was on for the Lyme made his skin very sensitive to the sun.  So before we went out on the water we made sure he was sunscreened up and we got him set up with the Columbia PFG UPF50 long-sleeve shirts, pants, and a balaclava to protect his face.

There was a light breeze and we were doing well when we noticed a few helicopters in the area.  Now, one helicopter isn't a big thing.  We live in Massachusetts and Medflights are as common as they can get.  But when you start to see a few at the same time and that low to the water....

So I look over at my Father and we have a short conversation about what it might be when it dawns on us that it's probably the Secret Service doing recon for Obama landing on the island.  At this point in time they've circled the Vineyard and are coming back around like they were doing widening circles into the Sound.

It takes a few seconds to dawn on him and then he starts scrambling to take off the balaclava while I'm laughing my butt off.

We wound out a decent day of fishing and took a few Bluefish for the smoker last night.

Its a heartwarming peice about what Presidents do on vacation when Bush was in office. Its a fnancial analasys of the vacation and eery inconvenience that it will cause now that Obama is in office.

Bush in Office: Aww, look at Bush chop through that brush...(on that multi-million dollar ranch that I'm sure has paid workers who normally do this shiat.)

While taxpayers are forced to put a little water in their bottle of Head and Shoulders to make it stretch, the Obama girls are living it up with a new bottle of hair product normally only used by white women. Stay tuned to find out how many days YOU would have to work to be able to afford the Obama vacation. Hint: you won't live long enough.

Who was taking so many vacations when we had over 4 years of incredibly high unemployment, declining wages, more discouraged people quitting the workforce, severe problems in the mid east, huge student debt, 16T in overall debt, companies and unions trying to get exemptions for Obamacare while the government gets special treatment?

Just curious.

Seems to have got some things done during that time, like coming out the worst depression since the 30's. Caused by, oh, I forget which party was in charge when you guys bravely stormed across the dessert with a coalition of the willing al those years ago.

Pretty much this.

to be fair, a black guy going to Marthas vineyard for vacation IS kind of a big deal.  It might be the WASP-iest place on earth.

I don't know if you people are joking .. but when the president of the United States goes on vacation, that's always news.  His ethnicity has nothing to do with it.

I suspect you haven't been paying attention. The news isn't that he is on vacation, but more of the standard "OMG this guy is spending all of our moneys on hotels in europe and fancy vacations".

Obama is being targeted as wasting our money for things that are normal and expected for presidents. The joke is that they are only biatching about this because he is a black guy being all uppity and stuff.

Ahhhh... ok.  carry on then.

You know what detractors should really be concerned about?  Not that the secret service is paid to watch the President while he's on vacation, but that they're paid to watch him while he's asleep.  That lazy good for nothing is lying prostrate and drooling onto a pillow and the tax payers are being forced (at gun point!) to pay for his protection.  Imagine all the money that could be saved if we did not guard the president anytime he's conscious!

The Stealth Hippopotamus: Bontesla: Even assuming your cost is correct - Obama's trip to Africa was a working trip.

And how many dignitaries were entertained at Crawford? Not every day at the ranch was brush clearing days.

Bontesla: That's more than I can say for the Republicans in Congress .

I know right! It's not like they are trying to listen to the people that elected them! They should be doing what the people who voted against them want! Right!

Very few people want that baby to live, so can we abort it now?

/trying to change up the language to get the Democrats on board!

Oh I see your mistake. You incorrectly assumed I cared about Bush Vacation Policy.

I'm happy to clear this up for you: every vacation that a sitting President has is a working vacation.

If that means that the President would enjoy another round of golf in between the daily security briefings, on-going wars, and all of the other crazy things they're assigned to handle then, gentleman, the next round is on me.

My issue is with this absurd attack on the vacation spending. We have significant waste in government. Spending over 100 million dollars to challenge something for the sole purpose of political theater is much more of a waste than a presidential vacation. And considering how much Obama has helped in reducing the deficit - I'm willing to give it to him. I also assume you realize that the actual vacation is paid by the President?

Although it is funny to see people on a daily basis who hate him soooooooooooooooooo much because he's black try to channel all that racism through his daily routine. There's just not enough venom for what he's actually done so it comes off sounding insane (oh you hate him because he ate a fancy dinner? that seems legit). It wasn't a scam.  I was one of the organizers.  The money ended up in 4 charities: Biden Breast Health Initiative, Wounded Warrior Project, GLAAD, and Doctors Without Borders. We raised about $15,000, after the incentives and fees, it was about $10,000 total to those 4 charities.

Fun fact: The Crawford Ranch was built during GWB's first election campaign specifically to provide photo ops, and it was built with the latest environmental tech in order to cut off any environment-related jabs from Al Gore.

When President Bush's final term came to an end, he said he had no intention of going back there... Evidently Laura didn't like staying there and they now live in a Dallas suburb.

That brush must really be piling up!

Skarekrough: A few years ago I was out on Nantucket Sound fishing with my Father in his 18 foot flats boat.

Heh, I was target shooting with buddies with scoped rifles on Naushon Island one summer when Clinton was on the Vineyard...we got a few hairy eyeballs from Coasties, but they never landed to check us out.

It was the only figure involved that was in the millions.

I'm surprised the article didn't read:

"For those wondering just how luxurious the president's vacation will be, the answer is that it is quite luxurious. The president (notice how I delegitimatize him by refusing to capitalize 'president' in reference to 0bama?) - along with First Lady Michelle, and daughters Sasha and Malia - will be residing for the 8 days in Martha's Vineyard, estimated to be worth a half a trillion dollars, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, arguably worth over 100 sextillion dollars. That's sextillion with an S and a SEX and a SEXT... haha reminds me of Anthony Weiner, the dick. Get it?! LOL OMG where is my copy of 'The Virtue of Selfishness', I need to jack off!"
