Not sure about the ativle's premise, though I concede its possibilty, but I have never seen a dog too tired for food.

The "contagious" human-canine yawn thing is real though, and is related to pack animal activity.  Apparently in wolf packs when the Alpha dog yawns, it's a signal to the rest of the pack that it's time for sleep.  I tried this with my own dog and it works.  A big fake yawn and he would yawn right after and curl up into a ball and go to sleep.  Dogs are awesome.
