So stated another way, universities' continual exorbitant price increases are causing desperate students to sell their bodies to survive?

I would love to learn about the fabrication of sub-30nm violins through vapor deposition and doping methods from the kid.

This.  I bust my ass all week for less pay than that, and though I have a great job for my area, I have trouble making ends meet.  What the hell did she expect?  She's clearing over $50k/year at that rate.  I have to work 50 hour weeks all year to clear $50k.  For a young, single person with no family to support, that's decent money anywhere but a major city.

OTOH, those degrees better be worth more than the paper they're printed on because otherwise someone's gonna off the deep end and visit their former campus and bring a friend with 'em if you know what I mean, and I think you do . . .

The problem is this:

$25/hour becomes $25K in expenses.

$25K -> ~$23K after various taxes as a single person.

6 months of rent in Silicon Valley:  $7000 to crash on somebody's couch in their shiatty lead-paint, asbestos-filled apartment.

So $25K just became $16K, and they want $16K.  So if you spent $0 and 0 cents, you'd be broke.  If you had actual expenses, you can expect to clear $6-8000 if you're exceedingly boring for a 3 month internship that pays $16000.  Do anything, and that goes down (I cleared $4500 after tax season, not counting my desktop).    So 6 months at $25K leaves you clearing about $5-9K if you haven't maxed out all your credit cards paying tuition and less if you have (though seriously, just take out loans.  They're lower interest than credit cards and if you're good enough to intern at Intel, you're good enough to earn money to pay them off).

It's good money. It's really good money anywhere outside of the places where interns make $25/hour.  It's not $16K/year in profit money.

I'm more saying that those wages are a fine living anywhere except major cities, which is why she didn't get assistance.  Yeah, the system is properly farked.  It shouldn't be anywhere near that expensive to better yourself through education, but it is.  If you go out and pick up a $50k/yr job on the side, intern or not, don't whine when you don't qualify for a public assistance check.  It's dump cash for the city, and it sounds like she's in the city, but for virtually the entire state of Kansas or Maine (or South Dakota, or West Virginia, or, or...) it's a good living.

AverageAmericanGuy: I actually think it's related to the pervasiveness and accessibility of pornography today. The current generation of college aged kids have grown up never having known that porn was not easily available on the Internet. They've become both desensitized to porn, and they have also become more extreme in what they expect sex to be. So when they need money, there's no moral sensitivity towards sex work (whether that be something like pole dancing or nude modeling or even prostitution).

The genie's out of the bottle now, so we'll just see more of this. It will be interesting to see how the current 'porn generation' sees itself in hindsight when it's responsible for raising their children.

I did nude modeling for the art department. It was way more difficult than I thought but I LOVED it. I worked with some pretty awesome people.

Also, I do some ummm...dancing when my student loans got terrifying.

My loan payments are less scary now, but still pretty awful.

iheartscotch: Mega Steve: iheartscotch: Why have sex for money; when you could take your clothes off for money? It's an much safer occupation; plus, you probably make more money. And, you only have sex with the people you want to have sex with.

Or you could become a camwhore. Isn't that safer?

That is a viable option. That way; you'd be raking in the dough and never actually have to interact with people.

But one mental breakdown when some viewer wants to see your entrails and your little show is permanently archived on the net at efukt.com. Not a good idea.

I did nude modeling in college.  It paid just enough for about two nights drinking at the campus pub.  Thankfully, this was the pre-digital era, so no pics of my hairy ass are online, unless some depraved individual from one of my sessions has scanned and uploaded their charcoals from that term.

It was oddly empowering.  During breaks I would just slip into my robe and hang out on the balcony smoking with the other students and feeling very much like Jamie Gillis.  Good times, good times.

It will be interesting to see how the current 'porn generation' sees itself in hindsight when it's responsible for raising their children.

Parents of daughters or gay sons will be "over-protective" prigs who insist on chaperoning their dates. He-man types will give their he-man sons condoms, rubber gloves, bondage gear and roofies.

By the way, I'm not assuming that "gay" means "effeminate," but a lot of young people of any type are easily confused and taken advantage of because they're not taught how to handle themselves. I support getting even the pinkest girl or most lavender boy into martial arts classes as soon as they can apply themselves. Coming up with a preemptive antidote for roofies would be good too.

A kick in the nuts would probably take care of that.

My skinny little half-Filipino 106lbs hippy niece can take care of herself.  She was taught lots of self defense.  Also, never piss off Filipino women. They carry knives.

I'd like to hereby add my voice to the inevitable chorus of dirty old men experienced gentlemen who volunteer to tutor these sex-worker students for free. Note that in my case the sex and/or gender of the applicant(s) is actually irrelevant, but I'm very picky when I tutor for free: send me some photos, I'll see if you qualify.

I may have cropped the article a bit short. That wasn't her complaint at all. Her complaint was how FAFSA dealt with a student earning for a portion of the year the funds she would need for her education for the next year and not taking into account her expenses to earn that $26. This effectively keeps her from earning $50 - $100 per hour as a graduate and paying taxes on that each year. It seems to be a lose/lose for everyone involved including the taxpayers.

FWIW, in 1980 as a sophomore, I was earning on my engineering internship in the boondocks with a very boring Fortune 30 engineering company what measuringworth.com would say was $36.20 - $84.40 in 2013 dollars, (and dollartimes.com says is $45 today) so her $26 an hour in San Francisco is not outrageous for internships.

Apparently according to the HuffPo article, it seems it would have been better for her to work as a stripper (especially earning cash) than to work as an engineering intern and rely on FAFSA.

(I have to crash... G'nite)

It's because UK kids don't actually work - they complain about being broke students, whine about not having a grant, but don't actually work to pay for their cost of living.   There's a huge market for anyone college age with any kind of office/business skills.   I spent a very profitable 6 months there, I had to push the jobs away with a stick.   In the US I worked through the winter at night doing snow removal to pay for school, then went to school after the sun came up. Get a job you hippies.

Farkers are interesting. Give us a thread about race, sex discrimination, homosexuality or transgender issues, the handicapped or mental health, and a majority will fall all over themselves pointing out bigotry and the narrow-mindedness of people who generalize groups of people.

Strippers and sex worker threads, however, are generally filled with the oldest, most worn out cliches and stereotypes imaginable and infantile accusations.

Isn't that the job you're looking for if you get a dance degree?
