There should have been a shout out to the most epic tease of Breaking the 4th Wall in the TV show Weeds.

There was a little kid who was talking to his invisible dad, but we weren't told that, instead we thought that he was talking to us.

Since the link isn't obvious in that article, Arrested Development's 20 Most Meta Meta-Moments is a better read (if you're a fan of the show).

The series is literally built around breaking the fourth wall. Glad they mentioned that.

There's only one fourth wall--the one between the actors playing the characters, and the audience.  Everything else in the article, i.e. almost all of it, has nothing to do with the fourth wall.

They left out the voice-over narratives that Michael Weston does throughout Burn Notice.

"...Then there's also Sesame Street and The Muppet Show - both of which included real-life celebrities interacting with Kermit, Miss Piggy, and various other fantasy characters, as though these talking animals were just regular celebrities:"

Is the article's author trying to imply that Kermit & Co aren't just regular celebrities? I may have to watch my DVD's of The Muppet Show again... I'm not sure what she's on about.

30 Rock and Community are/were two of the most self-referential shows ever aired and there's no mention of either of them.

The story outlines at 30 Rock even matched the real-life evolution of NBC: when GE sold the network to Comcast, it was sold to Kabeltown on the show.

And Community is as meta as you can get - even self-referencing its own meta-ness when Jeff asks Abed "Why do you always have to take everything we do and shove it up its own ass?" in Paradigms of Human Memory.

Lazy hack author is a lazy hack.

How can you have a story about the 4th wall and not have Deadpool?!

And yes he has been on the tv too.

2013-08-07 07:31:51 AM
Breaking the fourth wall in TV really goes back to the Marx Brothers' movies; Groucho had been doing it on stage for years, and he carried it over to the films, though it's clear that the editors didn't always know how to handle it.

And I can't believe someone put together that entire article without a single mention of Max Headroom.

Mobius strip of human stupidity: The Greeks never had a fourth wall. So this is more a list of shows that did not add one back in rather than remove it.

Well, yes, but that's ignoring 2000 years of theater between the Greeks and the beginning of TV.  Shakespeare frequently has a "Chorus" open his plays but then basically has him say "I don't know what I'm doing here, let's get on with it."

Yeah, it's like if I love Buffy/Angel and not Buffy/Spike (or vice versa) on "Buffy" and get into arguments online with people or feel the opposite way. I'm a huge fan, but to me that is insane.

It also refers to people who want a relationship that never happened, like I "ship" Harry/Hermionie (spelling?) on "Harry Potter."

I always liked two moments from Fresh Prince:

When Jazz pointed out that a different actress was playing Viv.

And when Will said something like, "We can't even afford a ceiling." and the camera pans up to the studio lights.

Then my Willow/Dawn erotic fanfic can be looked at as a legitimate thing, and not just page after sticky page of perverted scribbling?

Not sure Willow/Dawn is shipping, as they were actually in a relationship in the series.

You're thinking of Willow and Tara.

Dawn was Buffy's sister, aka the Key.

Truly a great show. Me and the roommate opt to watch reruns of that in the morning rather than the news. Usually puts us in a great mood, sans those two unexpectedly great and soul crushing episodes

If you like it when media breaks the fourth wall you should read Red Shirts. It is a story from the point of view of a red shirt on a star trek like ship and the entire thing breaks the forth wall.
