Oh boy.  This guy is a lunatic.  This will not last long.  Comically, it could be thought of as Planet Tod from that horrible movie, "Mom and Dad save the World", which was Idiocracy before there was "Idiocracy".  The guy even kind of looks goofy like Tod (Jon Lovitz).

While a disturbing story, we're only talking about a borough of less than 900 people with an area of 1 1/2 square miles here.

Which was a follow-up to the original story.  DailyKos is not the best.

it's Gilberton, PA a small coal mining town about 45 miles NE of Harrisburg and 35 miles NW of Allentown.

Yeah, its in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town of any consequence is Frackville, PA, which itself is in the middle of nowhere.

This is stupid.

Well, being rural doesn't really change the core issue.

"Media blackout"?  Googling for "Gilberton, PA militia" comes back with about 349,000 hits.  So sure, I guess "media blackout".

Is there any source other than Derpy Kos? Or is the media blackout just that extensive?

Yeah, its not just that its rural, its that its tiny. One stoplight.

The only reason I know of the town at all is because that part of PA is where a number of prisons are, I , uh, had to go to one of the prisons once, um, for something.

No, but it moves the story down on the scale from "US Town Taken Over" to "Way Overzealous HOA".

What? That's there's a crazy racist sheriff of a small town in central PA? yeah, I'd say that's realistic.

Left wing-like typing detected. I am sure somethings going on here, but something's not feeling right.

Pennsylvania police chief Mark Kessler is the head of a political organization which refers to itself as "The Constitution Security Force." Kessler was recently given a thirty day suspension, for using police property as props in a video where he threatens and insults "libtards," otherwise known as people who hold political views which differ from his own.

I wonder what Kessler's FARK handle is...

2013-08-06 05:06:37 PM
on one hand...it's Daily Kos.  On the other hand, I personally know that area and have been thru it before....so, yes this is possible and believable.

hmm.

To be fair, this is Fark. When there's any left or right wing blog there's usually a kernel of truth in a blanket of crap. Kessler, etc. is established - as are his cronies. It's not a stretch to think in a town that small they might be a bit scary, though the details could use a little fleshing out.

This is the same media that has a Newsflash when a celebrity sneezes. This is the same media that likes to scare people to get eyeballs on the tube.

Why in the blue hell would they pass up a hell of a story like a militia taking over the town?

as I've said, i've actually driven thru that neck of the woods (granted - not recently but still) and yeah, it really is that bad out there in them thar hills.  I wouldn't openly advertise that I'm a registered democrat and/or a pagan.  there's a decent chance I'd be harassed at the very least, or arrested just for being alive.

My read on this story?  its possible and/or believable...based on my experiences of having actually had boots on the ground in that part of Pennsylvania.  is it true?  dunno.  I'd have to go drive up there and see for myself...which would be about a 2 and a half hour drive for me.

no, what I 'agree' with is that I know that area and the people who live there.  well, the militia types anyways.  they're not at all uncommon in central Pennsylvania.  I'm saying the story here in Kos is within the realm of possibility.  Can I personally confirm it?  no.  could I see something like this happening in one of the small town shiatholes in the wilds of central Pa?  yup.  no question.

sorry if that shatters your world view.  we've got some really crazy idiots who live in small town Pennsylvania.  just happens most of 'em are right wing paranoid militia types.

There's no conspiracy here, it's just not sexy. Televised news does not exist to inform the public, it exists to entertain and titillate.

A conspiracy theory:
"I think this guy is a left wing plant to bring about gun control."

Not a conspiracy theory:
"This story does not involve attractive people, so we won't bother leading with it".

NBC, MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, Current TV, Al Jazera, BBC, and even the AP are not reporting on the story

Why? Because it is bullshiat. The author of the article claims this is a conspiracy for god who knows what, maybe not to scare the American people.

That is a conspiracy theory

I went to the cited website, politicalblindspot.org. It's now throwing out 502 errors (hello NSA).

But most of their content is fringe "news" with leftwing bent. "What you need to know about US internment camp" etc.

Not exactly a reliable source, to be sure.

if that makes you feel better, sure, but look how little coverage we have on what fracking is doing to ground water in Pennsylvania.  *sigh*  of the two of us, I've actually BEEN thru this area, and several other sewers just like it.  its my home state.  I live here.  I know these people.  so I'm basing my opinion on my personal experience.  i'm not demanding you agree with me, nor am I demanding you take my word for it....i'm just saying that - based on my personal experiences with this area and some of the types of people I know who live there - I think its at least plausible for something like this to happen.

it is what it is my friend.  take it for what you will.

It's one thing to advise against conspiracy but you seem to be totally unwilling to accept it could even be partially true.

I can only assume that you are not from Pennsylvania.

I'm not worried. If a town was taken over by a militia, this would represent an illegal usurpation of a government by radical extremists. The NRA claims to exist to protect our liberty. As the NRA and all of it's members have not used their guns to stop this tyranny, we can safely assume it hasn't happened.

QED

I'm confused as to why the size of the town matters.

No, get it right.  It's Jack Thwagger.  It doesn't sound right without the lisp on the end.

Also, you'll need to procure some weed in order to make the gimmick feel real.

This is the most reputable article I've seen and it's written by an anti-gun nut. His story is four days old so I'm sure if there was any substance or truth to it we'd have seen it explode all over the media. The ousted police chief is a douchebag and it looks like he runs around with a militia, but there is no evidence they've taken over the town.

2013-08-06 06:05:13 PM

Offtopic, but...

Okay, I get the "after the jump" bit, kind of, but I'm really glad to see it going away as there's rarely a "jump", but what the fark is this about?

More about this US Citizen Taliban takeover below the orange interstate highway interchange squiggle.

 images.dailykos.com

Why is that in the middle of the article? I just... I don't even...

2013-08-06 06:05:34 PM
If the "militia" was really in charge, I doubt the Borough council would have the power to suspend him without pay for 30 days.  Which they did.

This is just pants-wetting hysteria from a delusional Kos blogger.  He's probably more paranoid than the people he's afraid of.
