(AP)   Don't look now, but Japan has launched its largest ship since WW2. It can accommodate F-35s, and it's being sent to an area in dispute with China. This is a repeat from 1937   (hosted.ap.org) divider line 224

It only has a single Wave Motion Gun. No biggie.

It won't last long. Nobody can defend anything for long.

It has no arrester gear, so those F-35's will have to be the VTOL variety.  Which means their weapon loads and/or ranges will be compromised.

But at least we've found a sucker to take some F-35s off our hands.

Once you get an 850 foot flight deck, I think it's a bit of a stretch to call this thing a destroyer.

There's also a logic error. If this is a repeat from 1937, it asserts that at some point in 1937, Japan launched its largest ship since WW2. That war hadn't happened yet.

Japan, which has one of the best equipped and best trained naval forces in the Pacific but which has not sought to build aircraft carriers of its own because of constitutional restrictions that limit its military forces to a defensive role.

Japan says it has no plans to use the ship in that manner.

What is it you believe in? What is it you're fighting for now? Is it for that medal you received? Or your father's orders?

Nice ship Japan and kudos for its launch.   But bottom line is ...with America in decline, if you want to defend from your neighbors....you're gonna need a bigger boat.

/There can be no "surprise" attack anymore like in Pearl Harbor.  Satellite tech has taken care of that.  We know where their ships are at all times, and since there is no possiblility of surprise, no attack.

Meh. It's a helicopter carrier. Japan already has two flattop helicopter carriers (they call them destroyers to make them seem defensive in nature). F-35Bs can take off from pretty much any ship with a helicopter pad, but the Senkaku islands are within reach of land-based planes on both Japan and China, so it's a moot point whether Japan can deploy jump jets at sea (other than as defensive combat air patrol).

Going by recent history, the Japanese will buy the F-35s, then build them locally, and then make them a bunch better.

Well, this would entice the Okinawans for independence. Democratic countries with a very broken political system like Japan or South Korea cannot do anything productive. The Japanese Liberal Democratic Party would likely lose power in 2 years as well as the South Korean president would likely get impeached due to an election fraud last year.

hardinparamedic:

It hasn't for the Navy.  They use the flag, the songs, and the traditions from the Imperial Navy.  They technically cannot build a carrier because of the wording in their constitution, so the Navy built a carrier and called it a destroyer.  It doesn't have any arresting cables, but I imagine that wouldn't be too hard to retrofit in unless they plan to station purely VTOL aircraft in the future.

That being said, they certainly are posturing more toward Korea and China.  Their naval personnel have heavily trained with the U.S. since the 50's and the two countries are widely regarded as close allies.  I'm pretty OK with them having carriers.

A lot of things can accommodate F-35s.  Keeping one in the air is the problem.

The more I learn about military history, the more I'm amazed that the United States was able to defeat Japan in WWII.

Especially considering the Japanese had F-35s at the time.  I did not know that.  That is mind-blowing.

F-35 is the most capable attack plane in the world when you consider its stealth. And they're currently on schedule for full deployment. People seem to confuse a few teething problems with bad design. They're expensive, sure, but you gets what you pays for when it comes to combat aircraft.

I'm pretty an independent Ryukyu would be annexed by China even more eagerly than they're trying to strongarm their way into these islands.

Well to be truthfully the F35B doesn't exist in 2013 as anything more than a prototype and the 6 F35As are all grounded due to safety issues. It is the same problem the British are going to have. Aircraft carriers with no aircraft.

For the military (any military), having a floating airport is wonderful.  Of course, Japan is capable of projecting air-power for quite some distance without that.  This must be for long-range missions.

Their constitution makes them the United States' biatch, and the only forseeable conflict they would have would be with China or North Korea.

In addition, Aegis Cruisers and their SM-3/4 system have the fun and important capability of shooting down Theatre Ballistic Missiles, like the ones used by North Korea and China.

Let China take over Okinawa. Your average Japanese person is still racist against Okinawans. Ever since I've become a Canadian citizen, I happened to tone down my Sinophobia.
