That's an awesome app. This is going to lead to some amusing YouTube videos.

Stupid Apple. They should be pushing this app to the front of the 'top purchases'.

The sad part of that app for the iPhone is that if you catch the iPhone, you have an iPhone.

Better way to use app:

1) Cut a slice into a Nerf Football
2) Insert Phone
3) Tape slice closed with duct tape
4) Throw high

Why would it turn off?  Might go into "sleep mode", but, the app should probably still be collecting data in the background.

I don't have an iPhone but my iPad wouldn't turn off unless there was some kind of metal/magnetic inside the nerf football at just the right spots or the top button was pressed.

Also sadly the iPad was not the winner in the fall off a counter and onto a hard tile floor contest.

Here once more we see Apple having to put up the guard rails because they can't give their own customers enough credit to be just smart enough.

Then again, maybe they never were... or such consumers have already gone to a different os.

Can't you just cover it in bubble wrap and put it in an egg carton, then duct tape that together?

Sure, but I'll bet that greatly increases wind resistance and lowers your height dramatically, defeating the purpose.

Go to top of building, throw phone up from the roof so it falls to the ground at street level.

Are mobile phone accelerometers even sensitive enough to measure altitude, or do they just measure how long they've been tumbling? I bet some duct-tape and a wound up rubber band could break that world record. Just wind it up between your hands and let it twirl.

3. Don't turn off phone

Oh, that is a shame.  I am looking for a new android based phone and I wanted to check out the various form factors of the varous offerings.  Given that there is only one form function per release of iphone I do not see what the app is good for.

Depends on the app. Some apps keep the phone from entering sleep mode while running. You can also (or at least should be able to) adjust your phone's sleep mode setting.

4) This can't possibly go wrong
5) Get shattered iPad and hope glass not in feet.

This just shows that android users are more sensible about the claims they would try. An apple user would claim that if they threw their own phone on the ground and it broke then that is the fault of someone else, they are entitled to a replacement. "Look, I threw it on the ground and now it does not `just work`. Replace it or I will scream and cry"

An android user knows they would just get shown the door.

This one probably isn't even that complicated.  The accelerometer always reads acceleration due to gravity when you're holding the phone.  When the phone is in flight by throwing it gravity becomes the only force acting on it.  The Accelerometer will read 0 at this point in all axes.  The app simply has to time how long the accelerometer reads at 0 and then integrate the acceleration of gravity (9.8 m/s^2) to determine the velocity, then integrate it again to find the total distance traveled.  This distance would be assuming that the phone was simply dropped from a height (btw, you'll never measure the height of the empire state building with this app) instead of thrown.  The height the phone reached is assumed to be half of the total distance dropped.

That is given T, and a constant acceleration 1g (-9.8), the velocity is vz = -9.8t.  The distance is z =  -9.8 * t^2.  Height is z/2.  If the app knows you're throwing from a certain height it can more accurately gauge the height the phone traveled.

I don't believe that the accelerometer in a phone is accurate enough to be used in an Inertial navigation system.

/Math aside, this app is maximum trolling

5.69 meters is the record?  Must not be a very popular app.
