Financial abuse, not physical. Doesn't make it any less deplorable, but she has significant funds so I'm not surprised she's being robbed. It happens to the elderly all the time.

The book still sells 750,000 copies per year, according to Publisher's Weekly, translating into more than $1.5 million in annual royalties.

There are 750,000 sixth graders who have to read that book? As a former English major(*), I says unpossible!

* Got busted down to English Lieutenant when I called "Clarissa" 'needlessly wordy'. The teacher was a Samuel Richardson groupie. Nearly beat me to death with his cane.

As you grow older, you'll see agents cheat authors every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it - whenever an agent does that to an author, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, he is trash.

Used to work for a lawyer you did elder guardian work, and it neve ceased to suprise me how many people felt ENTITLED to thier parent's/Elderly relative's money and thought nothing of trying to rob them blind.  After all, the thinking of these people went,  they were going to inherit it anyway, so what was the harm in starting a little early?  And besides, Medicaid will pay for thier nursing home, so why let thier assets all get eaten up first?

I thought "Senior Abuse" was physical or mental abuse perpetrated by a caregiver. Screwing somebody out of their royalties? This is just good business skills. See a weakling, move in for the kill.

Writers are incredibly wealthy and usually don't miss a few million. The publishers, distributors, editors and book store owners are the real victims here. Just trying to give the public what it wants without some elitist 'writer' pulling up in an armored truck and demanding you fill it to the brim with nothing less that $20 bills.

I think the only solution here is to stop printing the book so neither of them get any money and so that no more children will be subjected to that insipid piece of shiat.

I remember hearing about this one FARK a while back. I think in the original thread many farkers were claiming that Harper Lee wasn't really the main author of TKAMB and kinda took all the spot light from the primary author. I think a few were positing that the Pinkus's father-in-law, who was Lee's agent, was really the main author

"She's 95 percent blind, profoundly deaf, bound to a wheelchair," Dr. Thomas Butts told London's Daily Telegraph newspaper two years ago. Butts is a close friend of Harper's who lives in the same Alabama town, Monroeville, that Lee has long called home. He added that Lee's short-term memory was poor, but that her longterm memory was in good shape.

Aaand I still laugh whenever someone is named 'Butts'.

I thought it was 21st century dumbasses who think surnames as first names are going to make them special.

But seeing how she was born eons ago, I bet her parents wanted a boy sooo much.

I was meeting last week with an NGO that finds jobs for people with intellectual disabilities. You may be surprised by how many parents felt entitled to their disabled kid's money (Not in a helpful, "let me keep an eye on your money so you don't misspend it" or "we are poor so you need to kick in for some bills around here"... but in a "momma needs new shoes" kind of way). One of the young people that got a job doesn't even have lunch or bus money at work because his mom takes his whole salary and basically the poor guy has to walk a long ass distance and depend on co-workers to help him out with lunch.

You should have seen the reaction i got from criticizing the works of Emily Bronte. If looks could kill the kid sitting behind me would have died too.  The teacher was expounding on the subplot of Heathcliff being a possible illegitimate child of the late estate owner.  I commented that Bronte was like 14 or something when the book was written. She needed an non-related third corner of this crappy love triangle she was writing so she introduced an orphan to the mix.  Where do orphans come from? Well Liverpool of course. There doesn't need to be any more thought to this book, it sucks, get over it.

Yeah I wasn't popular with my teacher, less so with my professor of Literature in my first year of college when I was assigned the book for a second time.  She wasn't fond of having a lowly engineering student question her insights.  Tough shiat lady. If you assign material that is beneath the class then the class will respond in kind.

This doesn't sound like a good idea.  If he's intellectually disabled and has to walk all the time, wouldn't he end up tardy at work?
