1. Fire the athletic training staff. All of them, even the intern.

2. Time for Jeter to hang it up.

Jeter should go for a new job, in fighting against corporate conspiracies and malfeasance.

For once I am disappointed jeterchrist can't play.

I really would have loved for him to put out another contract year effort to strangle the Yankees a little bit more.  Now, he'll retire along with Rivera.  And the MLB home office will take the arod contract noose off their next.  They'll find some fool to take Texeirearaearraearaa.  Next thing you know, Stanton and Fernandez from the Marlins will magically move north.

I get what Girardi has to deal with, but at this point, with the Yankees pretty far out of any real playoff hopes, couldn't they just give Jeter the rest of the year off?  Let him get healthy at whatever pace he needs, let him be ready for 2014 just like Teixeira and everyone else.

They're only 4.5 back. Their rotation is well above average, their bullpen is the best in the league, and their lineup is getting better.

I like their chances.

While agree with everything you said, I don't think the Red Sox, Rays or Baltimore show any signs of slowing down, so I think the Yankees' odds of catching up are slim.

Huh? Do you mean just Kuroda and Nova? CC is horrid this year.. his only saving grace is he eats innings. Pettitte is definitely showing signs it's time to retire.. for realsies this time. Hughes is horribly hit-or-miss.

The lineup is getting better? Jeter's back out, Tex isn't coming back, Soriano has yet to impress (and not holding my breath that he will) and at this point I've got money on Granderson being hit by a bus before the season's over. Yeah, A-Rod's coming back and given that a traffic cone would be an offensive improvement at 3B for the Yankees, he'll help regardless of how good he is, but chances are we'll have him for 3 weeks at best.

Shut it down. Line things up for 2014.

InfrasonicTom: And the MLB home office will take the arod contract noose off their next.

It would be one of the worst decisions MLB could make and would free the Yankees to go on another huge FA spending spree. I'd be pissed if I was a fan of the O's since it would fark up the parity of the AL East again.

/not a fan of any AL East team

They aren't that far out. They're only 4.5 games out of the second wild card. Granted, there's 3 other teams that are closer to said second wild card, but let's not pretend it's impossible that the Yankees can make the playoffs. The larger issue is that their bench sucks, as they've been filtering through players that the awful 2009-2012 Indians thought weren't good enough (Thomas Neal, Brent Lillibridge, Jayson Nix, Russ Canzler, and arguably Travis Hafner). Their pitching, on balance, is actually pretty decent (3.72 team ERA, 11th in the majors). Their hitting, on the other hand, is 25th in the MLB in runs scored. The only teams below them are well out of the playoff race.

On a related note, how did the Nationals end up so bad offensively? With Werth, Harper, Desmond and Zimmerman I thought they were pretty stacked (so much so that they traded Mike Morse because he didn't have a spot). Instead, they've given a combined 767 PAs to Lombardozzi, Bernadina, Moore, Tracy and Espinosa, to a combined WAR of -3.6.

the issue is that I don't see enough of the teams ahead of them faltering enough to allow the Yankees in even if they improve

For the record, I don't think they have a good shot either. The sad reality is that the Yankees are actually playing up to the talent they're putting out there. You just don't have a very good offensive team without Tex, Jeter, ARod and Youk. But I don't understand the swooning about "this season is over, we're so terrible".

Also, would not be surprised if the Yanks picked up Michael Young and/or Morneau.
