The  megalodon is rare and endangered. They shouldn't be exploited by the discovery channel.

For farks sake, Discovery, I know it's lucrative, but can you PLEASE refrain from trolling the gullible morons? I STILL see people who think the old Dragons "documentary" was real.

That mermaids show was one of the dumbest farking things ever produced for television, and my soul weeps that it was like the highest ratings ever for that channel.

See if you can find Micro Monsters with David Attenborough. Sweet show.

I saw this last night.  Just when I thought Discovery Channel couldn't go any lower, they did this.

Pretty good comment FTA:   It's official, Shark Week has jumped the shark!

Programming like this makes me really sad I cancelled cable.

I was honestly expecting Sharknado to be in the lineup. Or some mockumentary about sharknados.

Shark week sucks.

My wife and daughter was watching it while I was running some errands. They were both scared and huddled on the couch when I got. I told my wife it was fake after I put the kids to bed. I'm not sure when I'll tell the kids it was fake.

Goddamn it so much... I just checked the channel schedules for History, H2, National Geographic and Discovery and it's nothing but wall-to-wall stupid. And of course TLC decided to dunk it's head completely in the crapper years ago.

/ I'm gonna go donate to PBS now....

My 7 year old nephew figured it out and changed the channel after 5 minutes. Your wife's a moran.

/he was REALLY excited for shark week too. Everyone involved at Discovery should be in the unemployment line right now

Except this will probably raise the ratings from last year.  They'll be promoted and things will get even worse.

This is nothing new for Discovery.  They've been doing fake shows like this for at least a few years now.

They should just show a bunch of cartoons instead.  At least it would be entertaining.

At least they didn't have the so-called "naval officer" who was supposedly stationed in a city whose name he repeatedly mispronounced.

Was it at least a little more believe than their "documentary" about "aquatic ape" mermaids?

At least I know now I can delete that from my DVR.  Not wasting my time with shiat like this.

What happened, Discovery?  You used to be cool.

Their first 'victim interview' had a name that was an anagram of "jokers". (Jess Oker I think). Even the anagram was lazy.

Same here.  I recorded it, assuming it was about the extinct megalodon and how it relates to the modern-day Great White.

I love these things, if for nothing else, to find out exactly how stupid some of my co-workers are. I just wandered into a conversation that ended with "it just goes to show, we should be spending way more money underwater than in space...I mean, at least we got stuff down there!"

Just show sharknado every night and call it even.

turned it on and my 10 year old said daddy this might scare me and since we are going to the beach soon I don't need her scared of the water. I caught the end of it, the megalodon was diving to 6000+ feet., and I was suspicious as to the reality.

Right when something hit their ship and their power hiccuped, the power in my house did as well. It could not have been timed more perfectly to make my girlfriend nearly shiat herself.

The scenes from the whale beached in Hawaii looked so fake as well as the other footage. What a mess.

Deer kill and injure more people in this country alone every year than sharks worldwide.  The only reason you don't see Deer Week is because Bambi isn't seen as scary.

OK, Megalodon doesn't exist any longer, so how could they NOT use actors and CGI footage? I haven't watched this thing, but I'm curious as to how this is "fake"? Is this like that Mermaids one where they present it as fact the whole time, rather than as a speculative 'What If?', show, or did they present this as hard science, as if this all really happened?

They uses fake headlines, fake videos, fake photographs and according to what I'm reading now, actors. The marine biologist clearly sounded like he was acting at times, but then I read today that he isn't even a real marine biologist.

To be fair, unpaid actors are far worse.

I'm pretty sure cable TV will someday air a documentary on deep space which will consist of a black screen and audio.

It used to be called radio!

The real tragedy is the number of people who apparently saw it, figured out that the footage was fake, and therefore decided that EVERYthing was fake - megalodons included - and that Discovery wasn't about real things anymore. And yeah, Mermaids probably set them up to receive it that way (CSB, i accidentally got my kids to believe that potholes weren't a real thing because I mentioned them in the same sentence as aliens), but dammit Megalodons were real sharks that happened.

I didn't see it either, but I did see Mermaids, and I also saw the BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs special about sea monsters (which was presented as "real", though it relied on time traveling so i mean obviously it wasn't), so I have an idea that a) mockumentaries can be educational while still being fake, and 2) if this new one was made to the same standards as Mermaids, they deserve to be lambasted - but not for daring to show Megalodon during Shark Week. Just for making crapass mockumentaries.

/now i wanna see it, just to see how bad it was

I saw the promo in which an injured seal has been nursed back to health, and is being released from a pier.  Great white jumps up and nails it.  It was funny because it wasn't real.  Right?  Like, that didn't really happen, right?

If they had done an actual documentary on the Megalodon and framed it in its past environment and how it relates to the modern shark, that would have been really cool.

Instead they tried to pretend the Megalodon still lives and turned it into a shiatty SyFy Original Movie, complete with shiatty CGI.

It would have been fun to present this as "Could megalodon survive today?"  Have experts talk about the shark, its probable habits and food sources, and if it could thrive in today's oceans. Then could have used the Mythbuster's big fake megalodon, tow it past a beach, and video the reactions.

But yeah, the mockumentary was going too far.
