Meh. CNN and the other TV meedjah outlets were all over Second Life a few years ago, too. How'd THAT work out? Of course, the decline of Facebook has been going on for a good two years, at least. Even us "olds" are getting bored with it.

FTA: "The way the ads are done on Twitter I think is actually pretty clever." / "There was Myspace before Facebook, and then Facebook happened and everybody thought that was the next best thing, and then Twitter happened," she said. "I mean, there's always going to be something." / "CNBC tells the story behind the rise of Twitter, the social media giant whose 200 million active users have made it a fixture at home and around the world. Twitter Revolution arrives Wed., Aug. 7, 9 p.m. ET/PT."

If I didn't know better, I'd say the business news is talking up the prospects another company that's about to go public in a wildly-oversubscribed IPO targeted at retail investors. But as we all know, that sort of thing never happens.

I just logged into Second Life for the first time ever because of your comment, primarily because I remembered it was the "next big thing" so many years ago.  It seems like a wasteland.  There are people on it, but everything is set up as a locale and they're just begging for money for you to join a location.  It's like a 3d chat room system.

It would be great news if autoplay ads got blamed for tanking Facebook. Even if it's not true, it's a rumor worth spreading.

It's probably more the fact that their parents and grandparents use it. Things become uncool when Mom, Dad, and Grandma start using it.

Now if they'd only lose interest in texting.

What's "sad" about this? Maybe the kids are just developing more and are being interested in other things that may actually entertain and help them in the future.

Anyone who actually knows a teenager would have known they stopped using Facebook and are on Twitter and Vine and Instagram now. The march into vapidity and inanity continues! Although there is some pretty funny shiat on Vine.

To the Romerocopter!

I haven't used any of that stuff in years. Made an account back at the start of college and it was decent enough for seeing pictures of what everyone was doing over summers when we all spread out. Post grad though after moving overseas it dawned on me that I would

A) never see most of these people again and really don't need them following my life or following theirs
B) not have to listen to another person trying to talk to me about their great great grandfather being from Bumfark, Ireland and how they're totally Irish and I should totally visit their "hometown" while I'm out there working.

Deleted that crap ages ago.

// not really a CSB.

Ads...these kids too hip and trendy for Adblock?

2013-08-05 03:50:54 AM
I resisted the use of social media as long as I could, I really did.  But only after my entire family was on Facebook did I sign on and I have to say it's not a bad thing.  Yes, some things are annoying, but when you are a military family always living far away from everyone, and leaving friends behind and making new ones every three years, it's nice to have a way to keep in touch.  I put up pictures of the kids, and all the grandparents see.  I can talk to people that I met while living in Virginia while I live in Spain and they live in Guam.

I don't see why it has to be a sign of the downfall of civilization.  It's just a fine, handy tool.

LOOK! I CAN TURN THIS INTERNET AROUND ANYTIME AND WE CAN GO BACK TO farkING MYSPACE. IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT?

WHY CAN'T YOU JUST BE AGREEABLE FOR ONCE? IF YOU SAY ONE MORE WORD ABOUT FACEBOOK, I SWEAR I'M GOING TO TURN THIS GODDAMNED INTERNET AROUND AND THEN YOU'LL BE SORRY.

Don't fall for it, grownups.  These kids are just saying that so you'll stop using Facebook, which they will once again start using once you're gone.

When a group of teenagers says Facebook "confuses and scares" them and makes their eyes hurt, there may be a problem. they may be Amish.

2013-08-05 04:11:54 AM
It is all about the latest thing when it comes to stuff like this. Facebook sat back and relied on their original product thinking they could just tweek it a little to keep people interested. They didn't jump on the newer social apps like Twitter or instagram and try to develop their own version and somehow tie it into the existing Facebook model.

2013-08-05 04:12:42 AM
so if facebook is tanking, what's the next big thing gonna be? I'm getting too old for this stuff. Also i already pissed off most of my friends in facebook.

we just went on holiday, to a very nice hotel on a very beautiful island.

it actually shocked me how much everyone was constantly on their smartphones. three people would be sitting round the dinner table, ignoring each other, on their phones. reception was full of people on their laptops, using the wifi. not working, or sending vital emails to the catsitter, but playing online poker, or facebooking.

there are a lot of people in the world these days with no inner resources

What's this new "Twitter" thing they are talking about?

They make it sound like Twitter is the new thing out there. It's been around for over five years. I had a Twitter account before I had a Facebook account.

I'm pretty sure they cherry-picked this "focus group" of teens.

I've signed up for almost every social media site from Myspace to Vine.

Google+ is a lot better than FB because of the tools it has, like google drive. It's just no one I know uses it.

i know you hipsters are too cool for facebook, but the thing has expanded into many other parts of the world now... probably less than 10% of the 20-35 demographic in first world countries doesn't have an account...

My family plays what they call "Rectangles."  Everyone tosses their smart phone into the middle of the table in a pile when the evening begins.  If someone breaks down and checks, everyone has five minutes to check their own, but the original person has to buy the next round and is basically made fun of the rest of the night.  And the phones go right back into the pile.

It's fun to watch people unaccustomed to ignoring the update chimes twitching and scratching at themselves, wondering if that's their phone and if it's important.  The rest of the time, its a good way to make sure everyone is experiencing actually being there.

Google+ seems to have taken off with photographers.  Google doesn't claim absolute rights to your photos like Facebook does, and has a lot better tools for posting high resolution versions and display of various metadata available.  I'm a member for that reason alone, because you can learn a lot just perusing though professional's account pages.

My 22 year old friend has stated that the trend away from FB to other sites is due to his generation being too lazy to actually think up stuff and it's easier to just take pictures of your food and retweet than have actual opinions.

It's shifted from a social media platform to a corporate marketing tool.  As soon as the only way that your status showed up in all your friends feeds was with $$$, it failed.

I waste more time on this site than any of them.  I'll check FB about 1-3 times a week, I used to be on twitter a lot, but only on it now when I got nothing else to do while on break. #needtostartsmoking
