It was a pretty mediocre NES game?

Huh, so the new Doctor is well past middle age. When was the last time that happened? The trend of Nu Who was that every Doctor was younger than the last.

2013-08-04 06:48:52 PM
I was hoping he would be a black Muslim.

Peter Capaldi was in World War Z and played a W.H.O. Doctor there. This was written in the stars. Great way to add to the lore, Moffatt.

Maybe they want to buck the trend of young girls sexually fawning over the latter younging Doctors. This is a return to proper form to avoid the empty fangirlism that has pervaded the franchise as of lately.

Well, Moffat did delete his twitter because he was getting death threats from crazy teenage girls, so going with someone who they won't be in love with is probably a smart choice.

6. No matter who he is or how good or bad he is in the role the ubernerds that watch the show will biatch about him.

Never watched the show. Its "your dad's sci-fi" as far as I'm concerned.

If he keeps the Scottish accent and abrasive demeanor there may still be some fawning.

As the Doctor gets older, he's supposed to look younger. This is a flaw in the lore.

But I'm not opposed to him. He's just obviously older looking than Matt. Then again, who isn't!

Should be an interesting stint with Peter as the Doctor. Eh hem. The Doctor.

As in the definite article (thanks Tom Baker).

This, older, yet better looking than that geeky Matt Smith by a long shot.

according to my dvr, next week's shows are new. but i don't know if they're new or "new" because he pre-recorded a week's worth of shows.

Craig is doing "Shark Week Live" all week, so maybe the late late show episodes week won't be same-day recorded.

The Thick of It is hilarious, one of the funniest satires I've seen since Larry Sanders. If you haven't seen it, it's well worth a look, pretty sure its on netflix. Also, that writing team is the one behind Veep, which is also damn funny.

Eh? Where was that ever said? I mean, yeah, Hartnell looked the oldest, but I wouldn't say McCoy or Colin Baker looked younger than Davison-- and I think Borusa didn't always look younger after each regeneration... but I could be wrong with that.

Although, really, even the "He's sposta look younger" - maybe they'll deal with the 12 regenerations thing, giving him another 12, making #12 the same "age" as #1...

This is a true statement right here.  I mean, I love David Tennant as an actor, I think he's farking marvelous....but I would leave my boyfriend for him in a New York minute, no questions asked, if given half the chance.  Best part?  My boyfriend would leave me for Karen Gillan, and if I get dumped for a hot Scottish ginger....at least it's not for a troll, you know?

Sorta related to this, the choice of an older actor could make it easier to write certain kinds of stories. Granted, a decent 28 year old actor can pull off portraying a 900+ year old creature well enough, but a 55 year old is probably going to pull it off differently. Possibly (but not necesssarily) pulling it off better in some ways, with certain kinds of stories.

As much as I enjoyed the last three I'm really looking forward to this guy. I hope the casting choice inspires the writers to explore different directions we might not have seen with another young-ish Doctor.

Nothing in the lore says that he gets younger with each regeneration.  He's not Mork from Ork you know.

Maybe you should take a look at the difference between the 2nd and 3rd Doctors or the 6th and 7th Doctors.

Another related thing to make things interesting could've been to pair the ADHD 11th Doctor with an older, more mature and confident companion willing to confront the "young man" on issues - like Big Finish did when pairing the 6th Doctor with Professor Evelyn Smythe.

But I guess there would've been a group of marketing folks panicking about targeted audience groups needing eye-candy and a contemporary 20-something to easily identify with.

Hopefully, an older Doctor will kill the lusting after/obsessing over companions storylines we've seen so much of.

Nah.

First off, he was great in the role.

Second, his one season and out introduced the concept of regeneration to the new audience.

He served his purpose.

I thought it was pretty funny watching the announcement show yesterday.  First Smith says it would not be a woman and my gf's response was 'did people expect it to be?'.  Then they had this big build up and announced who it was and both of us were like 'who?', but I had to laugh because the people in the audience were going crazy so they obviously knew the name right off the bat.  As I got to thinking about it, in addition to the fangirls who were fawning over Smith for the last two years (while the guys were leering at Gillan and Coleman), this will probably make the show less marketable in the US.  I have a feeling, totally not proven, that the only reason the show was as popular here in the states the last 4 years was that Tennant and Smith (along with all the companions except Tate) were young and attractive which led to a bigger audience here.  I could be wrong, but would expect the ratings to drop a bit on BBCA this season with this older doctor in place.  Had they cast someone older but more well known here, like Laurie or Michael Sheen, they might not see a drop.

I guess time will tell.

By the way...have they said if Coleman is going to be back this year?  All this talk about Smith leaving, I never heard if she was staying.  Personally I thought she was a better companion that Gillan whose act got tired after the first 6-7 episodes.  I thought they never found the right balance between her worship of the doctor from being a little kid when she met him and the wierd attraction they couldn't quite address but always tried to play off with her devotion to Rory.

I'm fairly certain I saw a statement from Coleman that she's excited to work with the new guy, so the most specialist girl in the universe will be around. I guess she can't not be around since she exists in all times and places as a living deus ex machina.

Her story is/was...questionable...in execution but no more so than the Donna story line (Doctor-Donna, please) or the Amy/Rory stuff.  And don't get me started on the River Song plot line which was ridiculous.    The only redeeming parts of the Coleman story line were 1) the way they insterted her in to the past stories and 2) I quite enjoy looking at Ms. Coleman. I dare say more than Gillan but that will get me killed on Fark apparently so I will not say it out loud.  The only companion story they haven't made ridiculous was Martha and that had more to do with them not knowing what to do with her.

2013-08-05 12:46:04 PM
I am feeling good about this. Smith was reminiscent of Troughton (2nd Doctor) in the looks department and somewhat in personality. Capaldi physically looks like a cross between the 3rd (Pertwee) and 10th (Tenant) Doctors. I like that they're reaching back in that sense.

I don't know why. Gillan is plenty pretty, but has a lousy body. Those legs everyone was always gushing over were skinny and shapeless, but I guess because she was willing to show them, people were happy. I also think it was partially a redhead thing too. She's a pretty redhead so she's automatically surface of the sun hot. Personally I agree that Coleman is hotter, and at least this time the girl doesn't seem to have a boyfriend she's dumping in favor of the Doctor. I always thought that was kind of farked up. Rose leaves Mickey, and Pond was trying to get with the Doctor and we find out later that she's been engaged the entire time she was trying to get with the Doctor.

/Martha is still the hottest of the new companions, followed very closely by Clara.

Just re-watched "Planet of the Dead" last night and I can't for the life of me figure out how Michelle Ryan didn't become a companion. A hot cat burglar as a companion? Sign me up.
