From the Headline:  Speeding to follow your wife's ambulance to the hospital while she's in labor?

DON'T SPEED TO FOLLOW THE AMBULANCE. ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE RUNNING LIGHTS AND SIRENS.

All you are doing is putting your own life, the lives of everyone around you, and the lives of the people and your family member in the rig you're following at risk.

It sucks what happened to this guy, and I'm really, really glad that both no one was hurt, AND that they're not filing charges against him, but he was a danger to everyone on the road around him with the mentality like that.

You do not have any authority or legal standing to disregard traffic laws in order to keep up with a vehicle which is purposely equipped with warning devices and people trained to operate under emotionally trying conditions, and who have the legal authority to not follow certain traffic laws while acting with due regard for the public.

DRIVE NORMALLY. If you are that concerned that you have to be at the hospital IMMEDIATELY, ask to ride with that ambulance.

Oh, his wife was pregnant.  No reason not to drive like and idiot, risk killing some people and lead the cops on a chase.

Those cops should be fired for being mean to him.

2013-08-04 04:15:12 PM
Is anyone else pissed that they let him go and he (possibly) won't be facing any charges for this?

They shoulda Rodney Kinged his dumb ass.

"I'm really sorry officer, but my wife is in labor!"
"Oh Crap! Get her out of the car and we'll get an ambulance!"
"She's in the ambulance I was trying to follow."
Whack, thud, smack.

2013-08-04 04:20:52 PM
The officer tried to pull over the driver, who kept going as more officers and a police helicopter joined the pursuit.

Not only did he endanger people's lives by speeding and swerving through traffic but he kept going after the police tried to stop him?

This guy sounds like a moron.

I don't recall anyone in my family calling an ambulance when they went into labor.
Heck most of them where in labor for 12 hours or more.

2013-08-04 05:24:01 PM
He was probably speeding to catch up and inquire about that $970 bill he was about to get.

2013-08-04 05:36:47 PM
Wouldn't it have just been easier to stop and explain things to the cops? They'd have probably given the guy an escort.

That's how it worked on "Dragnet," anyway.

2013-08-04 05:39:04 PM
What an idiot, 8 cops in pursuit, and a helicopter.  All he had to do was to stop for the first cop and explain what was happening.  Cop probably would have just told him not to speed and let him go.  Troll comment by the subby for the title.

2013-08-04 05:40:02 PM
Then he explained that he was just trying to get to the hospital with his pregnant wife. Police verified that paramedics had taken his wife to a hospital, and the man was released, Officer Gerry Waclawek said.

What an oddly cognizant decision by the police. I think usual SOP in this situation is to go back to his house and shoot his dog.

2013-08-04 05:40:59 PM
If things were that desperate, why didn't he ask to ride in the ambulance? Usually the medics will let family members ride in front, if there's a compelling reason why they can't be allowed to sit in back. Hell, I once rode in the ambulance when one of my officers had to go to the hospital with heat exhaustion.

Hm. Now that I think of it, there may have in fact been a "compelling reason" why this guy wasn't allowed in the ambulance. Several, in fact.

2013-08-04 05:41:10 PM
I use the ambulance as a lead blocker all the time to get through traffic, and this guy is going to ruin it for everyone.

In the early 1980's it was very common to see a civilian vehicle following an ambulance.

To those who point out that this guy was an idiot for what he was doing, may I play Devil's advocate?

Perhaps it was life and death, that his wife was in imminent danger of giving birth to the Antichrist, and he was frantically attempting to catch up to them in order to stab it with the sacred dagger to save us all?

Maybe you guys should consider the other side to a story before throwing stones.

I guess we're well screwed now.
Thanks a lot, SDPD.

I think I'd be more inclined to understand the irrationality of this shiat if it was someone's kid injured and they just couldn't manage to think it through.

This.

And guess what geniuses.  If the guy got into an accident while following the Ambulance guess who would share liability?   Thanks to lawyers, the Ambulance company, and the 2 EMT/Medics in the Ambulance.  Yep that's right if you have a family member following you like an idiot you have to pull over and instruct them not to follow you.  If they continue you are required to request police assistance.

I didn't think ambulances were allowed to go faster than the speed limit, and this article doesn't say that he was actually following it as much as he was trying to get to the hospital. I'd have to ticket him. It's one thing if you're following right behind, riding in the wake of a siren and avoiding normal traffic patterns, but if you're just recklessly driving on your own to the hospital then that sounds illegal no matter what the circumstances are. What, next we'll have everybody with a dying relative in the hospital driving like morons to get there? That's a looooot of people.

Next time he should just call 9-1-1 and relay all the info, and he probably would have gotten an escort.

But explain this part to me (Im asking in humility since you claim and probably are a paramedic)... how does it risk the rig ?

Ambulances are big boxy trucks.  It's hard to see what's in front of them.  If that ambulance has to suddenly stop cold because some idiot can't figure out what to do when there's loud sirens and bright flashing lights behind them, then pop-to-be runs the real risk of rear-ending the ambulance because he probably thinks they don't need to stop for anything.

Remember, when driving, everything in front of you is at risk of you doing something stupid.

Depending on how fast you are going, if the ambulance has to come to a sudden stop, you could plow into it. Depending on what you're driving, that could do some serious damage. An ambulance isn't an armored car.

And what made you think that?

Laws vary from state-to-state, but in mine "emergency vehicles," including police cars, ambulances, and fire apparatus all have the same exemptions from certain traffic laws. Those laws include ones governing speed, lane, one-way and traffic control devices. There are many specific factors that need to be met, such as lighting and siren, plus the catch-all of using those exemptions with "due regard." Ultimately specific agencies or companies usually have in-house SOPs placing restrictions on employees, but legally the rights of an emergency vehicle are fairly wide open.

You're making some good points here, and I'm open to giving this father a specific license to drive like an asshole at all times. While he was detained, the swap probably already happened and the kid's being swaddled in evil in some Romanian forest by a cabal of Satanists. Every moment that he's not recklessly driving towards Eastern Europe is a moment that baby is using to suckle blood from virgin breasts. Hell, it probably has wings at this point, so give this dad a fighter jet and point him east.

How about a nuke? I know the Antichrist needs to be pierced by those daggers; but couldn't we consecrate the outer shell of a small tactical nuke instead and just drive the whole thing into the village? Yes, the collateral damage would be large; but no sacrifice is too great when destroying the Spawn of Satan. A final sacrifice, if you will.

I can't even start to fathom what made this jackass think that his wife's being safely in the ambulance ahead of him gave him some sort of license to drive his own car like a maniac and endanger everyone else on the road (and I say this as a parent who has had to follow an ambulance with my terrified six month old baby alone with strangers in it.) I'd have cited this guy twice over. Regardless of training, the crew is still people who are more used to being in that situation, and aren't likely to be freaking out as much.  Even if you've got a new kid on duty, it's not their friend/family in trouble and they did choose to work in EMS (therefore probably more ok with the drama than the general public, felt they could handle it) - and so, likely to be calmer and more rational.

I've heard a few cops talk about this, and paramedics. Most of the time when a woman goes into labor, if no one did anything at all, nothing, you'd end up with a healthy mother and baby.

My mothers comment was usually the first pregnancy the woman and husband panic worrying something bad is going to happen if they don't get to the hospital.  When actually noting is going to happen for another 6-12hours.  Third pregnancy, that's when you have women giving birth in the supermarket. Ladies like, oh, I'm in labor, well I'll go to the store and get a few things I need first, then boom 20 minutes later she's delivering in the breakfast cereal isle.

My mother said my brother took 24 hours. Me, 12 hours of labor. My sister an hour. Said the obstetrician was put out because he didn't have time to dope her up first or basically do anything but catch.
