Lawnchair: A large part of the rating appears to be 'cost of living'.  Which means, a place that people actually want to live (and thus has comparatively expensive housing) is rated down, while a place like Columbia that has plenty of $60k Garth+Sexton crack shacks (and commensurate rents) is rated up.  That factor helped each of the SEC towns on the list.

Since there's really no logical weighting to something like 'best college town', it's fairly meaningless.

Columbia has lost its charm, going home just makes me sad now.

Gonz: You know what's a good college town? West Lafayette, IN.

I'm not a Purdue guy. I've got a business degree from a Texas school, in fact. But West Lafayette's almost a cliche of what a college town might look like.

Not really. I went there freshman year and then I transferred, because it basically sucked donkey balls. No "underaged" bars because you needed two forms of ID, 2:1 guy to girl ratio, dreary cloudy and cold weather, and a lot of backassward kids from small towns in Indiana.

You're thinking of Morgantown, West Virginia actually.

Stadium police stole my liquor in West Lafayette. And that of many other visiting fans. And NO Purdue fans.

Farkers.

I live in Fayetteville. I love NW Arkansas. It's the rest of the state that's a steaming pile of crap.

FARK YEAH MIZZOU

But seriously, Columbia has beco9me a traffic nightmare mixed with periodic gang fights and a city council that sticks their fingers in their ears and pretends that the population is still 20,000.

jbc: I'm assuming Lawrence, Kansas isn't on the list because the criteria doesn't value general ignorance, meth labs, trailer parks, and the city catching fire every once in a while.

Butthurt Missouri fan

You explained it perfectly. As a fourth generation Columbian, they have not dealt with the growth and gang problem at all. People getting killed downtown and Hyvee, WTF? My uncle and cousin were caught in gang crossfire last month at a stop sign.

I was there last month and somehow the business loop got even seedier, and downtown felt odd and not fun.

Yes, because nothing screams "college town" like having 2+ million people.

Stillwater and College Station are shiatholes.

Sure, if you find titties, beer, drugs, and football in your face all day, everyday boring, it's pretty boring.

It's highly amusing to see Mizzou run from being irrelevant in one conference to be irrelevant in another conference.
