Well, not like they can do a fat Doctor. How would he run?

By eating all his celery.

Nobody has ever gotten fat eating lots of celery. Not in all time and space. It just doesn't happen.

So, Peter Capaldi is a Doctor Who fanboy, Scottish, and previously appeared on the show.  I'm thinking Moffat & Co. really dropped the ball on this one.  They could have come out and said, "Fine, here's some hints as to who the new Doctor is going to be.  He's been on the show before, he's Scottish, and he's a huge fanboy."  Then everyone could shiat their pants thinking Tennant was coming back, only to hear the BBC announce Peter as the new Doctor.  Then Moffat could stroll out and say, "Who did you think we were talking about?"

MAXIMUM TROLLING.

Colin Baker. Argument invalid.

Coco LaFemme: I've heard Peter Capaldi's name tossed around quite a bit as the odds-on favorite to be the 12th Doctor, so that's who I'll go with.  It certainly won't be Benedict Cumberbatch, he's too big of a name (though he is a natural ginger, and the Doctor always seems to despair that he's not), no matter how much I'd love to see him do it.  I think if he played the character with a touch of Sherlock's sociopathy, that would be very, very interesting.

Also, if I see one more "fan" demand that David Tennant come back, I'm going to reach through the computer screen and throttle them.  I loved David Tennant as the Doctor, I think he absolutely defined the role, not to mention the fact he's a stellar actor in everything else he's done, but come on.  The Doctor can't degenerate, no matter how much I'd love to see brown pinstripes and Chuck Taylors back in the TARDIS.  It's time to move forward.

Looks like you win

#7, Sylvester McCoy is only Doctor I skipped. I took a break from Colin Baker (ARGH! the outfit my eyes!)  until Eccleston re-invented the role in 2005.

I'm pretty happy about this, although Rufus Hound said, "Peter Eccleston" so I'm wondering if he almost blew it. Anyway, Peter Capaldi is older, which is what I wanted. He's also a lifelong fan of the show, as was Tennant, so that gives me hope. I didn't dislike Matt Smith, but I just didn't care about his Doctor. I loved Rory, and Amy was pretty cool. But Matt Smith's Doctor? Eh, whatevs.

Point being, why devote an entire broadcast show to announce the next actor to play the title character in a 50 year old serial drama whose sole point is that they can recast the title character with the simple in-universe explanation of reincarnation or soul redistribution to perpetually keep the show running forever.  Imagine if they did that with Jersey Shore.

I still kind of wished it was Craig Ferguson or James Nesbitt, but I'm sure he will be a great Doctor.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: FirstNationalBastard: baka-san: Already had a 12th Doctor
*coughtrialofatimelordcough*
No, The Valeyard is an incarnation from between the twelfth Doctor and his final regeneration. That would make him Doctor 12.5.

If we want to play this game we can say that we arn't getting a 12th Doctor but a 11.5.

I hold that the Shalka Doctor is 11.5, created during the Great Intelligence's / Dr. Simeon's adventures in screwing with the Doctor's timeline in "The Name of the Doctor".  They have the same voice and fondness for winged collars.

Congratulations to Peter Capaldi, though.  He was good in "The Fires of Pompeii" and great in  Torchwood: Children of Earth.  I guess we know what Craig Ferguson will spend his entire show talking about on Monday night, between his love of  Doctor Who and his nearly life-long close friendship with Capaldi.  The main downside, to my mind, is that it pretty much dashes the dream I had of him guest-starring on  Veep; the show desperately needs Malcolm Tucker or someone like him, and it's what makes it so meh, compared to  The Thick of It. Maybe Jamie MacDonald can show up instead of Malcolm.

2013-08-04 03:10:02 PM
Loving the comments about his age when the character of The Doctor travels about in time and is essentially ageless.

Capaldi is a fine, fine actor and if he brings even the slightest bit of Malcolm Tucker with him, it should be brilliant.

I'd give Dr. Who a chance, but I watched a few episodes of the 70s version on PBS when I was a kid. It looked & still looks cheaply made.
Also now that it's some kind of 'geek cred' thing I'm passing. Tired of the popular geek thing.
