Kirobo - derived from the Japanese words for 'hope' and 'robot'

For companionship, I would have gone with "Hobot".

Urban Dictionary rocks so hard....

Kawaii:  Means 'cute' in Japanese. Horrendously overused by fangirls on anything chibi. ANYTHING. Because they feel the need to repeat the three Japanese words they know OVER AND OVER. And they LEARNED said Japanese words by watching 'Naruto' in Japanese on YouTube ALL THE TIME.

Kirobo - derived from the Japanese words for 'hope' and 'robot' - has been sent into space to keep astronaut Koichi Wakata company.

"I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that".

Launch from Japan of a rocket up to a space ship in orbit, carrying a five-ton payload?  Harrumph.  I'll remain skeptical until I see whether the Best Korean news media confirms - or even acknowledges - this.

Cute (yes, yes it is), non-threatening appearance with no worry of the "uncanny valley" effect, pocket-sized, articulate (physically), vocally provocative and reciprocal..Anime companion come to life on your desk..

Do I want one..?

YES.  Yes, I do..  I can see this li'l guy becoming a real commercial winner, properly marketed..and first-use on ISS sure ain't a bad start (see:  Chris Hadfield levels of popularity)..

In other news, apparently the AE-35 unit on the ISS is going to go 100% failure in 72 hours.

Ok, so what exactly can it do?

KarmicDisaster: In other news, apparently the AE-35 unit on the ISS is going to go 100% failure in 72 hours.

I would recommend putting the unit back into operation and letting it fail. It should then be a simple matter to find the cause.

We can certainly afford to be out of communication for the short time it will take to replace it.
