FnkyTwn: It's true that the song is from an early (1969) Sesame Street (obviously the original is Italian), but it was used in an incredibly popular Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper commercial in a national ad campaign in 2007, and that's when it really caught on. I'm old, and I grew up on Jim Henson, but even I don't remember the Sesame or Muppet incarnations of the song. The Dr. Pepper commercial though was hilarious, but the last time I went looking for where I heard the song 'recently' it only turned up the originals.

TLDR: Here's how most people know the song

Funny, I only know it from Sesame Street, Muppets and Benny Hill but don't remember that commercial at all.

Pretty much this.   That is one fine headline, Submeister!   I am awed by your greatness and humbled by your geniousness.

By "most people" maybe you mean "most people who were under 20 at the time". I personally knew the song from a version on an LP by the Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler, which is a great arrangement BTW. The original LP ("Arthur Fiedler Super Star") hasn't been released on CD that I know of, but there is a a compilation release that includes it. I identify this recording more than the Muppets as "my version" of the tune.

/Yes, getting old

No, i'm pushing 40 and I remember it in 2007 quite clearly. But it was everywhere as a pop reference right after that commercial came out, so either this thread attracted all the 42+ somethings on Fark.. or you're all simply misremembering. It was on Sesame Street in 1969... so if you were born in 1965 then yeah, you probably remember it I guess.

I'm 44. Like many other shows, Sesame Street recycled sketches/aired re-runs. The Muppet Show aired in the late '70's/early '80's. I've always known this as Sesame Street/Muppets. My recollection of the commercial you posted was everybody saying "Did you see the commercial that used that "Mahna Mahna" song from the Muppets?"

GODDAMMIT! A work buddy of mine is in Bahrain right now, doing a Navy ship tech assist. He was twisting my arm to go with him, but I wanted no part of visiting those damm barbarians. Jeez. Well, I hope he manages to switch his flights around so he can stop by Paris to visit Morrison's grave. He's a big Doors fan...
