OgreMagi: Not all of oakland sucks.  There are actually some high end neighborhoods in that city.  However, if you don't know the city you can easily end up "on the wrong side of town", which is the majority of that shiat-hole city.

csb: before moving to the Bay Area, my buddy and I came up from L.A. for a few days to find a house or apartment.  Because we didn't know which areas where bad, we had to drive around to learn for ourselves.  So with our apartment list in hand (from a service, before it was all on the internet) we drive to what sounded like a great place in Oakland.  As we're driving slowly up the street looking for the address, some homeboy walk in front of our moving vehicle giving us the stinkeye and an attitude of "what you gonna do?"  We decided if he pulled a gun we'd run his sorry ass over.  We stopped looking for the apartment on that street.  That was all we needed to know we weren't going to live there.  We drive past hommie, who was still giving us the stinkeye, and out of Oakland.  We never considered any address in Oakland after that.

A note to terrorists who obtain a nuke.  Consider Oakland.

When I moved to the Bay Area, my buddy and I were looking for a place and we didn't know the area well either. We looked for apartments in neighborhoods that had a high percentage of Volvos (it was 1990, if I were doing it today, I'd look for maybe Priuses). We ended up in Oakland, and I've lived in the same neighborhood ever since. In fact, when I moved 3 years ago, I refused to look anywhere else but this neighbhorhood. Walking distance to BART, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, a movie theater, a public rose garden, the lake (with botanical garden, bird preserve, and Childrens' Fairlyland), a weekly farmers' market, and dozens of restaurants. Within a couple miles are dozens more restaurants and shops, etc., etc.

The bad parts of Oakland are pretty bad, and there are a lot of bad parts of town, but there are at least as many neighborhoods like mine.

As for this kind of crime, this has happened a few times now, and the MO suggests its one crew of criminals hitting these TV crews - not indicative of the city's crime problems as a whole.

I'm not sure it's about the money, although I could be completely wrong.

I worked in news in San Francisco for many moons, and left the business 2 years ago. At the time I left there was an incredible animosity and antagonism towards news crews. It got really bad during the Oscar Grant riot. The Occupy stuff was the icing on the cake. News crews are the bad guys now, and are very easy targets.

/my 2 cents

If news crews didn't always seek out the most extreme whack job they can find at any political rally, maybe there wouldn't be so much animosity.   You became the bad guys because of your own actions.

Why do you think I quit the business? I got tired of fighting the circus atmosphere and trying as hard as I could to squeeze a nugget of news in between stories about singing dogs and latest episode of Dancing with the Stars. There's only so long you can fight the good fight.

Why are people like you so obsessed with race? There wasn't  any description of the suspects  at all. If TFA  describedthe suspects and left out race, you'd have a point. But what you have here is nothing but a red flag that you're obsessed with race.

I think that was his point...the media and other-is obsessed with race until it's "that one". It is a bit weird.

Well if that's his point, he should make the point when it's relevant - when there's a description that might otherwise include race but does not. If he  has a valid point, it's not valid here. This was just an opportunity for a thinly-disgused "those darn darkies" comment.

It's Oakland.  We have all the information we need to know the race.

So, then you've never been to Oakland?

Black or African American  106,637 - 27.3%
White  101,308 - 25.9%
Hispanic or Latino  99,068 - 25.4%
Asian  65,127 - 16.7%
Two or more races 14,076 - 3.6%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander 2,081 - 0.5%
American Indian and Alaska Native  1,214 - 0.3%
Some other race  1,213 - 0.3%

Part of the reason I love it here.

It almost crushed my soul though.

I spent 25 years in the business, and when I started I felt like I was actually shedding light on corruption, injustice and government waste. Over the years deregulation and consolidation poisoned the biggest advocate the American people had. I tried to uphold the standards I learned when I first got into the business. When that didn't work I tried to uphold some standards. At some point I realized that I was putting more crap on the air than good stuff. At that point I quit.

And I do mean I quit. On a Tuesday. After the morning news. I walked out and never looked back.

I miss the news. I don't miss the shiat that's masquerading as news. But, I do miss the news.

What? I honestly don't understand this comment. Nobody in Buffalo says they iive in the NY tri-state area, because they don't. Buffalo is Upstate New York.

I actually have met many people from both places, who say they are from new york, and they miss the city, and then you find out where they are really from.  We get tons of transplants here in Florida who think it gives them more street cred if they say they are from New York, but never mention what part, like we assume the city...

I am from New Orleans proper.  But people from Kenner, Metairie, the north shore, etc will just say New Orleans.

It is the least liberal place I have ever been to, all the equality talk was lip service.  The people who were really cool were native Californians, not the people who moved there from a fly over state to reinvent themselves.

I dated a vietnamese girl from Oakland and I really never had any problem there.  It can be a little hairy, but then again I lived in Colombia during Escobar times.  She said I did not have to worry about being in Oakland because you could hear the "soul" in my voice.

Also? While not widely reported, but known to all members of the press and police presence at both the Oscar Grant riot, and the Occupy protests-turned-riots is that there were anarchists who would show up with the specific intention of starting shiat. the ones who were arrested all came from outside of the county. Many from hundreds of miles away. They showed up to start shiat, and the police finished it. Most of the unidentified black-clad shiat starters got away.

There was speculation that a good number of these infiltrators were government folks. I couldn't tell you one way or the other, as I was not allowed to investigate the claims or cover the story.

I doubt they were "government folks," but they're almost certainly not local, and definitely not interested in the purpose of the protests.

Runs_With_Scissors_: I will tell you this, and it is the absolute truth: I was instructed not to do Occupy stories, that it was giving them attention. I also worked with a 27 year-old assignment editor who found protests 'boring', regardless the cause. She also continually confused the Viet Nam and Korean wars.

People get sick of Occupy stories though. They'd been covered enough.. people will just change the channel. At some point you have to cut it out.

Oh I've meaning to ask, what happened to those folks anyway? Did they get jobs or something? I don't hear about them anymore.

I have no idea. I left the San Francisco a year ago.

Stories.... Do I have stories.

I worked for a company out of San Francisco and I had to fly out and live there for a week out of every month.

However, in San Francisco proper I was insulted by white folk because of my southern accent and when I spoke spanish I was told "you are pretty white looking for a mexican".

Dude, you should spend a week in Cincinnati. Or Kansas City. I could go on.

One of the big problems with SF right now is social stratification. All the low income people are being forced out of the city, or in to marginalized areas with no infrastructure, decent schools, jobs or even supermarkets

/it sucks you were treated so poorly there

I had a good time, I laughed it all off, and I was with a vietnamese girl with natural 38 dds.  I did have a waitress on fishermans wharf read me the riot act when I pointed at a baby sea lion and asked for it medium rare.  Seems like she though I was serious.
