I knew a guy working as a pilot at a commuter airline who made about $14 a year at the time. He was from Orange County and well off family. His folks gave him one share of Berkshire Hathaway for a Christmas present one year - value $10K.

They had commercial airlines in the 1700s?

It appears I have found your answer Pick. Thanks edmo. For what it's worth, I believe Berkshire Hathaway created a class B share in part so people could gift them without exceeding the $10,000 gift tax limit.

I bought one share of the class B stock, before its 50-1 split in early 2010.

BRK.B is quite affordable and has been crushing the S&P for several years.

With all that money, one wonders why Anne Hathaway needed that internship at Prada.

I love reminding my Dad of the time when I was in 6th grade and we learned how to read stock pages in the paper. I told him to borrow $20k and buy 2 shares of Berkshire. That was about 30 years ago.... Also, he didn't do it (as if that needed saying)

I started investing 15 years ago.. Wish I'd known Warren would still be as healthy and active as he is now.  Good on him.  But damn me.

And yet, Berkshire will still now pay the taxes they owe.  Buffett is a tax-dodging douche.

Much like when I told my parents to divest and put everything in newly public MSFT ('86?). They declined and kept their money where it was - in savings and loans.

Also recommended AOL when it went public, same result. They swore they'd listen to me next time, but I got nuthin'

Can't really fault a guy for not buying $20k (in 1983 dollars) worth of stock on the word of a 6th grader.
