So far, CBS is coming off as just slightly less evil than Time Warner, if for no other reason than Time Warner is lying their ass off about the money CBS wants by claiming a 600% price increase.

Well, I was joking.  And since this is a thread about cable and so forth it seemed appropriate.

Seems to me this mainly affects Showtime, etc. viewers. I assume in these large markets, aerials will work fine for CBS itself.

I've had cable or satellite since 1980 and only premium channels had no commercials. I remember when HBO didn't even start broadcasting until 4 in the afternoon.

No, because it's never been that way, at least not in the last 25 years. And there are examples of commercial cable channels as far back as the 70s.

As far as this dispute is concerned, I think TWC is by far in the weaker position, given that people pay them directly for Showtime. If I were a TWC and lost access to something I paid for specifically, I'd be pissed.

Um, no.

Cable TV in the beginning (1960s and early 1970s) = better reception of local broadcast channels, and broadcast channels from far away.

If you're transmitting your stuff free over the air with a gorram antenna, you shouldn't be able to demand a penny from a company who is, at least in the case of the OTA stations, merely acting as the consumer's antenna.  I have very little positive to say for the cable industry, but that's just common sense.

The cable companies should have put their foot down when the law allowing that was passed in 1992 and never paid a penny for OTA content.  Once they said, "fine, we'll pay 3 cents a subscriber to our local NBC affiliate", they were already on their back and all that was left was negotiating prices ever upwards.

Even worse, now those negotiation come bundled with how much they'll pay for Showtime, ESPN, USA, etc, etc, etc.

Correct...  Home Box Office never has had commercials. The non-premium channels were originally just independents and superstations from other parts of the country.  MTV had to be one of the earliest niche channels and while it was mostly music videos it did have commercials.

THIS. I first got cable in 1982, and the "basic tier" ALWAYS had commercials... WGN, WTBS, etc. Only stations without commercials were the premium stations like HBO, Playboy, etc.

That said, I "cut the cord"(by cancelling Dish Network) about three years ago. Got tired of all the cable channels changing formats from their original purpose. Had 250 channels, and the only stuff I was watching was on the local stations anyway, so I put up an outdoor antenna on a 30' mast. Getting 18 stations. Plenty to watch for FREE. Saving about $120/month.

Might eventually subscribe to Netflix or a similar service IF I ever get a faster internet connection. Did the trial, but it was "buffer city" if my son was online at the same time.

CBS is blocking web site access from Time-Warner Internet subscribers.

So if you have another TV provider or get TV over the air, but you have Time-Warner cable internet, it sucks to be you.

Not sure if you're kidding or just not very bright. Cable TV is a re-transmission service, not a content service.

Just pirate a stream.

Hey, it's not like you WOULDN'T pay for it if you could. However, maybe you can only get cable, satellite is a bad idea because where you live is really cloudy, and Time Warner is a monopoly in your area. Not your fault. Stream it illegally.

Anyway, Time Warner is farked up. It took me three days making phones calls, speaking to different people before I was finally able to find someone who could upgrade my internet speed for the price that was advertised to me online. All of their customers are on one of a 1,000 different plans and depending on how old your plan is you can't be helped with even the most simple task by any of their representatives.

^THIS.  I tried to cancel my premium channels while I was unemployed till at least I could get a new job and resub again.  I told the lady I don't know how many times I want to cut all my premiums (just the one anyway which is HBO) and get just the digital cable package for the basic cable channels and keep the internet package.  She then told me, that the deal I can give you will give you Cinemax at a low rate.  I said I didn't want that, I don't want any premiums at this time.  She then said that she couldn't do that and kept offering me the same package over and over.  I said listen lady, it's not that difficult to end a sub to premium channels and that I've had it done before.  She continued to ask why I wasn't listening to her.  I said I was but she's not listening to me, the customer to cancel any and all premium services because I don't want them at this time.  Yet she continued to say she could offer me Cinemax for a low price.  I finally got fed up and hung up the phone on her in mid sentence.
