What the hell?  Looks almost nothing like a sentinel.  And why is there a car's AC vent in the middle of it?

It's the new iSentinel.

It does look a heckuva lot like some expensive bag-less vacuum cleaner.

And why would they make it so skeletal and frightening?  Part of the terror of mutant registration and Sentinels is that they seem like good programs honest (non-mutant) people would support, at least at first.

I don't hate it!

came for the X-Men nerds complaining about 18 foot tall Sentinel not fulfilling their personal vision, leaving satisfied.

It's not horrible.

"Let me just put these crucial hydraulics right on the outside of the shin..."

Still looks cool though.

The giant vent in the middle looks a bit silly. We'll how it does in action sequences on screen.

Could be worse.

If Cyclops was still alive inverse, and who knows, he might be towards the end of the movie, he could single handedly (eyeily?) take it out.

For some reason, I'm betting that big fan on the torso will prove a weak spot. Hopefully the rest of the movie isn't as blatant as that.

How does a giant robot really defend against mutants, many of which can basically nuke things with their minds, in the first place? Admittedly I've read very little of the comic but I never quite understood why sentinels were mankind's go to weapon of choice against mutants.

The vent bugs me too. It reminds me of a Fruit F**ker 5000, with fancy new ghetto paint job!

Same reason you'd use drones instead of pilots: robots are disposable. You can make enough of them so that you can outnumber and overwhelm just about any mutant, given the right circumstances. In the old cartoon they were used also to grab teenage mutants who hadn't really mastered their powers, and they're a pretty good weapon against mutants with psychic or otherwise worthless-against-robot powers.

I honestly think they just needed a new villain class that could be repeatedly killed over and over on television without angering parent groups, sort of like how GI Joe had Cobra made entirely of robots, so it was cool to show massacres at ten on a Saturday, because they blew up with circuits instead of blood.

I kinda see it as a way to displace guilt on acting racially. Average non-mutant maybe doesn't want to be out there swinging the proverbial billy-club against other humans. The robots do it for them. .02

It looks like it's supposed to be a prototype.  You wouldn't use feet like that on something outside of a test facility.

Assuming "nailed it" is a new phrase that means "completely missed even a resemblance of the mark", then yes.

Nailed it?  Nope.

Sentinels are purple, with bulky, Kirby-esque proportions.

If you wanted a sleeker, more modern look, I think you still have to stick with the classic color scheme and the distinctive robotic stocking hat.

Maybe I'm just dumb but I don't remember these things patrolling the streets and keeping me safe for the past few decades. Am I just not looking in the right places? I take the train everyday. Please address this in your new x-men documentary.

Sincerely,

That's "nailing" it?  Looks pretty crappy to me.

2013-08-02 06:10:20 PM
I'm not a comic book nerd (I read them casually) and I'm not an engineer(I read popular mechanics and sciency articles here and on other sites) so I'm kind of disappointed by these sentinels.  They seem to be fairly fragile looking and have fairly obvious weaknesses.  There appears to be a fair amount of exposed wiring and the joints don't look particularly well designed for intense combat.  I'm not sure but I don't think its balance would be very good when facing determined opposition.  Looks like it would fall over fairly quickly.

Android forms for anything much larger than a human is just plain dumb. It's appealing to the "monsters that look like man are the most scary" trope.

Maybe they should have considered the prime sentinels.  There is something scary about knowing the person having a drink with you could be a killing machine.

They could have just painted the training bot from Real Steel purple and been done with it.

It's.... not terrible.

I hope it's just the earlier version and we can see some more advanced ones.

Is "nailed it" the new "smoking hot"?

So a modern fan in the chest instead of a floor vent in the belly like the old designs.

The "stocking cap" look really makes the things. I get that they didn't want to put "muscles" on the robots, which just looks tacky and is stupid, but the head very much needs that distinctive band. As much as them being purple, that is what made a Sentinel a Sentinel.

I don't know if anyone hit the video, but...

The Sentinel seems to be part of the Future story line. I don't know why something from 2015 (or whenever) looks like it is from a 90's iMac.

Its legs are ridiculously long and it has a huge vent in its chest. If I weren't already horribly disappointed with Hollywood I might be surprised or upset about this.

FTFL: "In 1973, Trask Industries introduced the first Sentinel production model, the Mark I "

So maybe the Mark I's will look a bit more traditional, since this is a picture of a Mark IX or X from 2023
