The "real' Area 51.... if all those dolt's would have moved on from looking for aliens, they'd have gotten to this a long time ago.

Who the hell is behind Buzzfeed? This piece of shiat website has been everywhere lately. It's certainly not the quality of their listicles.

It doesn't matter where the NSA data center is. They just need indexes on data that's already in the cloud. Their data center is your cloud storage. DropBox, Gmail, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr. It's already out there. The NSA doesn't have to host shiat.

Not every fringe conspiracy theorist is obsessed with aliens. Some of them have been releasing documents and keeping an eye on NSA properties for years.

Cryptome is a great example. You should check out cryptome's eyeball series if you are interested in documented NSA facilities and finding out how deep the rabbit hole goes. Like this one in being built in Georgia in 2009, which was later completed. And boy is it spiffy!

Nothing says "highly plausible massive government conspiracy" like an organization that employs tens of thousands of people. They are all in on it. It's a conspiracy within a conspiracy. In fact, Snowden was actually a false flag operation BY the NSA to trick people into thinking they do evil things when in reality they are force behind Pinterest.

I just re-watched that film, in light of the current NSA scandal.

Now, obviously, some of it is patently ludicrous:  The NSA doesn't have "Ops" guys, for example.  But some of it is scarily accurate.

Take, for instance, the tracking of individuals via satellite.  We can't even do that now, but we have the functional equivalent:  drones.  They're more accurate, have a higher resolution than satellites, unlike satellites can be re-tasked on the fly and don't have to contend with the inconveniences of orbital mechanics so they can actually loiter in an area pretty much permanently providing 24/7 imagery coverage*, and to a certain extent they can fly "under the weather", so an area with high overcast that couldn't be captured by satellite could be by a drone.

Real time location tracking?  They don't even have to actually bug you anymore.  Just check the metadata from your cell phone.  It beacons your location all the time.  This is how the Boston police were able to close in on the Boston Marathon bombers, by tracking in real time the phone that was in the car they stole.  I should point out that the fact that it beacons your location isn't necessarily sinister, it's just the consequence of how the cell system works:  The system needs to know which cell tower it needs to route your calls through.  To do that, your cell has to "ping" the local cell towers periodically.  And of course it has to be available to public safety agencies so they know where you are if you are reporting a crime, fire, medical emergency, etc.

*When one drone is low on fuel, it can be replaced by another.

It's a BIG data center, but it's not that big. Microsoft and Google have bigger, along with a few others. Power constrains them to maybe being able to store 1 month's worth of data live. They could have all kinds of data in other formats, but they don't have the juice to store more in flash or a spindled medium.

Yes, they do. They need versioning.  If you have a plan to send to the bad guys, you don't leave the damn thing up there, you put it up, get an acknowledgement it's been received then take it down.

And PRISM seems to work on the upstream connections, not at the data centers.
