So I've been trying, real hard, to watch the 7th (new) season in order to get up to speed and ready for the new doctor.  I'm just not liking this combo of the super-ego-dandy doctor and the smart girl.  At least with pond the dandy doctor played into their childishness and her personality worked against his.  I think I just don't like Matt Smith's doctor, it could also be the lack of solid stories he's been handed.  In every one of them for almost the whole last season and this there's been no sense of urgency or potential for loss, I just don't care about what happens in the episodes because I know it all works out fine within it or at most the start of the next.

Thanks for listening, you may now EXTRAPOLATE.

Yeah, this season has definitely been the weakest of all. In the past, I would watch the latest episode a couple of times before the next aired. This time I've only watched one or two episodes more than once.

You mean a one-off compelling horror monster can't be extended into a compelling recurring foe?

They can hover. And have been able to since at least the 80s and Remembrance of the Daleks.

The writers have sacrificed the individual episodes at the expense of the long arc. So we get 40 minutes of pointless wandering around through the motions, followed by 2 minutes of "OH MY GOD!!!! CHANGES!!! SHOCK ENDING!!!!!" and repeat the following week.

The "Good Man Goes To War" thing was a glaring example of this. "The Doctor will fight the greatest battle EVARRRRRRRR!!!" Which was a small, lame, uninteresting battle, followed by shock and character reveal.

It probably can be, but in this case wasn't.

Yep.  I watched season seven and winced through most of it.  The writing, in most places, was just painful.  The unconvincing Pond farewell, the Russian scientist happily singing Ultravox, the Doctor making an erection joke after forcefully kissing Jenny, Clara "rescuing" the Doctor through all of his incarnations ... sometimes.  It was pretty craptacular and cringeworthy.  I know that Tennant's run had some painful moments, too (Fear Her, Yoda Doctor), but there was usually SOMETHING positive you could get out of them.  This season was just awful, with only a few bright spots here and there.

Moffat is just struggling to come up with ideas/arcs that make sense, and they've become so convoluted that Matt Smith (or Arthur Darvill) can't rescue the scripts anymore.

\I thought the plot for the Silence trying to kill the Doctor was contrived, but damn, it almost makes sense compared to this season
