(The Atlantic Wire)   Think that all those NSA programs don't really affect you because you have nothing to hide? Well this guy happened to be Googling "backpacks" while his wife looked up info on "pressure cookers" and a half dozen cops paid him a visit   (theatlanticwire.com) divider line 158

Non-story, they were reported by their employer. NSA was not involved. Yet.

Suffolk County Criminal Intelligence Detectives received a tip from a Bay Shore based computer company regarding suspicious computer searches conducted by a recently released employee.  The former employee's computer searches took place on this employee's workplace computer. On that computer, the employee searched the terms "pressure cooker bombs" and "backpacks."

After interviewing the company representatives, Suffolk County Police Detectives visited the subject's home to ask about the suspicious internet searches. The incident was investigated by Suffolk County Police Department's Criminal Intelligence Detectives and was determined to be non-criminal in nature.

The story is that he had nothing to hide yet apparently the government is so corrupt that he still had something to hide.

Have you ever looked up how to make a pressure cooker bomb? My husband, ever the oppositional kind, asked them if they themselves weren't curious as to how a pressure cooker bomb works, if they ever looked it up. Two of them admitted they did.

So this guy was Googling how to build a pressure cooker bomb on a monitored computer at work while buying backpacks.  That context added via update basically kills all the outrage.  He clearly wasn't up to anything nefarious and the same thing would happen if you ordered 100 cases of sudafed.  Good thing a couple of the cops had a sense of humor about it

According to TFA, one person googled "pressure cooker bomb" and "backpacks" at work.

Not "a woman looked at pressure cookers while the husband, in the next room, expressed an interesting in hiking."

Subby's headline sucks.

I'm not sure either.  It sounds like it could be middle eastern so probably terrorist related.

Actually, I think it might be South American.  I don't know.  Still probably terrorist food.

It should have a follow up tag. It's basically an update to say the guy got turned in by an employer after being "let go" because he was using his work computer to look the shiat up.

Had nothing to do with NSA spying or scary feds, it was a routine follow-up on a tip.

Nice to know that things aren't QUITE as crazy as that story initially made them out to be.

If they were coming after people for random google strings, I'd already be in Gitmo.

What obviously happened here is the guy is an idiot whose curiosity got in the way of his common sense, and he was looking up things at work that were inappropriate. It's probably going to turn out the guy got pissed off when he was fired and said something about blowing the place up, too.

Agreed, I didn't think I was going to like it but stuffed pepper with quinoa is pretty awesome.  The only thing that makes it better is cooking the quinoa in chicken broth.

I envision an America where people are taken from their homes, black bagged, beaten, jailed and tried in secrecy. This is McCarthyism revisited. Are YOU a terrorist? Is your coworker? See something say something has turned into Google something and people with guns show up.

I frankly don't believe it.  If this was the case, why  not say so when the reporters called for comment? Why wait 48 hours?

The very fact that the term NSFW exists shows just how many people are going to listen to that advise.
