What is it with oriental cultures and consumption of rare shiat for the sake of consuming rare shiat?

Surely ruining the world would offset any social capital you'd gain from dumping case on some tasteless luxury, right?

Where did the link take me? it wasn't anything about sharks.

Yah I've heard about the farming of shark fins is basically slicing them off live sharks and then tossing the sharks back into the ocean to sink to the bottom and die.  Fark cruel cultural bullshiat like that.

/meanwhile, I am blind to the process that makes bacon, totally blind.

Fetuses are neither rare or expensive in China.

4500USD per bowl is what I was told in China. Disgusting, to Westerners, as we place some sort of value on life. We would never eat a fetus, we would put it in a dumpster behind Planned Parenthood, where they belong. In North Korea, they'd be all over those dumpsters at night.

Most "scallops" in restaurants today is really shark meat.

I'm all for eating sharks, but ffs catch and kill the whole beast, and definitely use as much of that tasty flesh as possible, you cruel twats.

Article was tl;dr, to summarize:

Making laws is like sausage, they put in a loophole for dogfish fins that is a mile wide and makes it very easy to illegally catch other sharks, so the sharks are STILL doomed.

I would cry but I'm done crying over the hopeless situation. Maybe if we're really, really lucky the social stigma for eating shark will spread quickly in China and kill demand, but most of the big sharks have already dropped 80-90% in population. If we're lucky they might recover in a 100 years or so, if we totally stop fishing for them. Good luck with that.

If this doesn't bother you at all, you are a sad human being. A future where we go back to treating all life as disposable and predators as "pests" like we did 100 years ago would be a terrible step back.

I love watching the Japanese Iron Chef, but it always bothered me the way the announcers would go crazy whenever the chefs would use shark fins or foie gras.

Sharks urinate through their skin.  That give the meat that tangy flavor.
Enjoy.

Fish sticks are made out of shark, it is one of the commonest fish in the ocean.

Sorry, close but not a match.  They punch the wings of sting rays with a cookie cutter to make fake "scallops" and few people know the difference.

Finning sharks is wrong though, if you catch the fish you should use the whole thing.
