This is what infuriates me about Ted Cruz:  He is NOT a Stupid man.   If this crap came from Steve King or Michele Bachmann, or Steve Stockman, I would believe that they actually believed something that stupid.  But cruz is a Harvard law Alum, with a pretty good W-L record arguing ccases in front of the US Supreme Court, which, whatever you feel about its current make-up, is no place for intellectual lightweihts (Clarence Thomas obviously excepted).

So Cruz KNOWS this is utter horseshiat.  He's playing pure demagogue and saying stuff that will rile up the credulous portions of his base that eat this crap up with spoon to increase his chances of getting the nomination in 2016, damage to the country be damned

I live in a place that gives Ted Cruz power.

Nothing you can say about these people is false. They're ignorant and they're wicked and they'll die that way, and the knowledge that no hell awaits them and that they'll never have to take responsibility for their conduct makes atheism a bitter, bitter pill.

ManateeGag: Magorn: increase his chances of getting the nomination in 2016

he's still inelligable, regardless of what he tells you.  His father was born in Cuba and he was born in Canada.

But his Mother was a US citizen so he's totally "naturally Born" under the meaning of the term that is now accepted by the same people who are still donating money to Orly Taitz.

Yes, you say, but wouldn;t that make Obama eligible as well? Evenif he WAS born in Kenya?

No. Of course not, that's a totally different situation because
A) Obama was an inexperienced 1st term Senator with no executive experience
B) Obama was a LAWYER trained in the evil den of socialist indoctirnation called HARVARD
C) Obama had never had ANY job except being a lawyer
D) Obama's Mama was from HAWAII which hadn;t been a state for very long when she was born there and his father was KENYAN not CANADIAN.

 See the difference?

Ashyukun: Mad Scientist: The first thing that happens in a government shutdown is stopping the pay for members of congress, right?

Sadly, I believe they explicitly passed a resolution so that they WOULD still get paid regardless. Which IMO should be means for recalling and flogging every one of them that voted in favor of it.

It's not a resolution, it is the 27th Amendment.  The text says you can't vary legislators' pay before an election.  It was written to stop it rising, but the language says "vary", which would include lowering.

The utter devastation and suffering that was promised and came about as a result of the sequester puts the lie to that statement. The breadlines, the people dying in the street, the complete collapse of our infrastructure and economy from a few tenths of one percent of cuts should serve as a valuable lesson that the government is as essential to our existence as air.

They're exaggerating their cancer, I'm sure.  Seriously, you GOP fellaters are totally cool with murdering Americans by stealing their money, then giving it to the rich instead of using it to help anyone... and as long as you don't see it in the street, you think there's no lack of morals associated with it. You hate the American working poor so much that you'd let them die of treatable conditions just so ADM shareholders can get a couple bucks more.

Show where people were saying there would be societal collapse and bodies in the streets as a result of the sequester? The sequester did exactly what it was projected to do per the CBO estimates: cause more service congestion with furloughs (though Congress changed their tune on the TSA when they realized it was a personal inconvenience) and a slowdown of government spending that slowed GDP growth as a result. The problem with the sequester is that it was a lazy and unfortunate across the board cut, with no wasteful programs being eliminated but programs that are already underfunded saw equally significant cuts.

Also, you're saying that since the small cuts of the sequester didn't cause major harm that reducing the government's budget to zero until one side or the other caved on their demands would be equally harmless? Federal discretionary spending is $1.258 trillion, or about 7.73% of GDP. If the government doesn't pass a continuing resolution or a budget, that number drops to 0. That's not even taking into account the procedural delays caused by loss of federal services. You really think that going weeks, months, or potentially the rest of the year without that cashflow can be dismissed as nothing to concern yourself with?

Nope, in a shutdown, congress still gets paid. Some of their staffers don't, military contractors don't, some military benefits programs get halted, old people don't get SS checks, and a litany of other bad things happen.... but Congress still gets paid to not work, just like always.

Klippoklondike: I don't know a whole lot about it, but isn't a government shutdown drastically different than being closed on the weekends?  I would imagine a shutdown involves layoffs and having to move money around just to maintain the status quo.

You don't get paid if you don't work on weekends.  And you don't get paid if your employer ceases operations.

IT'S TOTALLY THE SAME
