That's just terrible. He already knew Mandarin, and now he has a job on television. Where can I send my donations?

Whenever this happens, it's required that they already know how to speak the language.  You don't just magically wake up with knowledge that you didn't have before.

It can happen that they wake up speaking a 'language' which is total nonsense though.

For an article about an Aussie speaking only Mandarin, there was shockingly little screen time of the Aussie actually speaking Mandarin...

What is interesting about these is storage of different languages in the brain. I wonder if this effect would occur, where one language was severely impaired while another left unscathed, when children are raised bilingual. One of the initial parts of learning language is abandonment of phonemes unnecessary to this language, but with being raised bilingual this means phonemes for either are maintained. Presumably, this would be in the same region of the brain whereas phonemes learned later as a second language is learned once a native language is established would be in a different region of the brain, if only slight.

The snacks on their kitchen table were really depressing looking.

Maybe I'm just hungry.

There's nothing magical here.  He woke up and his default language flipped to Mandarin, which he could only speak at a beginner level.  The "fluent" part seems heavily emphasized by reporters.  More likely, because his brain flipped languages, he was more comfortable and spoke it naturally.

It is pretty easy to mess up Mandarin if you're not a native speaker. In high school, I'd intended to tell my teacher I had flown on an airplane for the first time. Airplane is fēi jī.

I told her I'd flown on a fat chicken.

Sometimes you do. I remember my first erotic dream, I woke up with knowledge I didn't have before.

How did you manage, you stutter or something?
