The carpet is the joke, right?

We seriously had carpet exactly like that in our house at one point back in the 70s.  :)

Yup. Where's my brandy?

I wonder how much that had to water that carpet every day?

Good stuff.  But,  Jack Benny is kind of a dick...  Genius? Yeah. Funny?  Yeah.  But still kind of a dick.

And yet he knew how to surround himself with good talent.

Another great voice from his programs: Frank Nelson. So great, even the Simpsons pay tribute to him from time to time...

Amazing how much of the humor relied on catch phrases.
Also amazing how unfunny most of it sounds now.

That was my reaction to the video as well... an interview with just Mel probably would have been better. Still a great video to watch, regardless.

2) piss on thread for no f'ing reason
3) saunter out, head held high in the knowledge of a job well done
4) favorited by all as "asshole"

Mel Blanc was a genius.
Pair him off with a Chuck Jones type director and you have comedy gold that never goes stale.
I never get tired of "What's Opera Doc" or "Rocket Squad".

No brandy. Evan Williams sour mash. I'm poor.

You must be from the post 1995 MTV generation.

I was thinking that, too.  He simply HAD to be the center of attention the whole time.

he damn sure wasnt going to give him the seat next to johnny.  he was an unpleasant taskmaster who happened to be funny.  mel blanc was a far more important entertainer, imo.  i can still catch some Benny reruns.  They're charming at best but rarely a solid belly laugh that pretty much any Bugs cartoon can provide.

In other news it was also considered okay to just light up a cigarette on the air back in '74.

(Johnny at about the 8 minute mark)
