Jason Herzog channeling Carol Burnett with the ear tug.

I wouldn't even pay $9.95 for that ppv.

Testiclaw: Klippoklondike: Testiclaw: Or "circuit training" for fighters pisses me off, too.  The idea that EVERYTHING needs to be about wind and cardio makes me homicidal.

It's why you have these farkers who can't pick anybody up and toss them.

Nick Diaz is all cardio.  It works for him against all non-elite guys, but once he fights top dudes he can't impose his will and loses.  A little power wouldn't hurt.

He is a perfect example, albeit he specifically competes in crazy endurance events.  And yes, I think both of the Diaz bros need to get some strength in their games.  They can set their cardio aside and build some strength and still NEVER have issues gassing.  They just don't lift.

Other guys will do stuff in the gym, but they keep it all retarded, like Crossfit or just really high-rep stuff, since they neglect strength in favor of cardio.

In essence, they turn strength sessions into metabolic sessions which are a shiat compromise between strong and lungs.

Metabolic conditioning will always be a compromise.

If I ever got into practicing MMA, I would heed your advice

Probably cause one of the fighters resembles Carol Burnett from some angles.

Head ... Chancery was it? Haven't heard that term in forever. And never written it, so forgive my probable misspell.

10-9 Askren

Well, the Chandler fight ought to be exciting, and should make up for this typical Askren fight

10-9 Funky.

Out of this world grappler, he is farking incredible...

Fark, he is fantastic but boooooorrrrrring.

Testiclaw: dr_blasto: Even worse if you take into account modern equipment, measurements and accessibility.

Even in spite of knowing all this, you still see tons of pros using bodybuilding techniques for s&c.

So, so true.  People don't want to do the part, just look the part.

If I see a dude who has big arms and a big chest, I'm never worried.

If I see a dude with a big neck and thick motherfarking wrists, I start to piss a little.

If I see a skinny dude with farked up ears, I know I'm about to get farked.

Heh. Fight shins and cauliflower ears.

"Never?" They already do, their conditioning is incredibly overrated. Nick got beat up while taking deep breaths in the 4th against Condit, and Nate was in survival mode for the 4th and 5th against Henderson.

He doesn't know how to apply a choke.. There is a door open a mile wide to end this fight with a choke and he doesn't know how to apply it

Eh. Great wrestling may never be a big draw in MMA like striking, but especially to guys who've wrestled (and I've only ever wrestled friends in high school - no jokes - called it), it's still real interesting to see how true wrestlers operate. It's not like he's just lying on im.

I hate Askren, but he does a damn fine job of conservation.

Other guy is exhausted, he just coasts at a sustainable level for himself.

Trained with a guy at our gym for a while who said "I don't do squats, those are bad for your knees. They're just as bad for your knees as deadlifts are for your back."

He had big biceps, though.

I'd concede that; overrated conditioning, for sure, but can last longer than 80% of whoever they fight.

I dig submission grappling, not straight wrestling.  It's the technical beauty with none of the submission beauty.

Lift HEAVY. not reps. I've always found the big oly lifts translated well to fight strength.

Ah. I see what you guys mean, and retract my last comment.

Doesn't come off that way.. Most of what I've see tonight is no one knows how to finish a fight when they have every opportunity to do it.

When people tell me that, I just agree with them.  It's easier.

That's the start of it, for sure.  Oly lifts are a double-edge sword in that, while useful, they take coaching time, a large amount of practice, and certain equipment.

They can be hard on the wrists and fingers/thumb, which is another consideration for combat athletes.  I think, for certain sports, they're required, but for others overused.

My favorite submission, I hope I get to actually try it one.... WHAT THE HELL!?! WHY'D HE GIVE IT UP!?!?

2013-07-31 09:15:47 PM
LOL

The whole crowd collectively moaned, gradually increasing intensity as Ruskie rolled down onto his butt, and finally his back.

Holy shiat.  That was the single WEAKEST TKO I HAVE EVER SEEN.  WOW.

2013-07-31 09:17:57 PM
And mercifully it's over.

2013-07-31 09:18:10 PM
Wow. And that Russian guy was undefeated huh? Should this loss count for like 2 or 3?

2013-07-31 09:18:42 PM
Hey Askren, you don't have to make every punch 100%, but going over 1% might be nice.  Just a thought

2013-07-31 09:19:15 PM
I liked when Askren asked the ref, "how much longer do I have to keep hitting him to stop this?"

But the commentators, who are tools, were talking the entire time and didn't pick up on it.

2 or 3 rounds after everyone else watching, but hey, gotta be professional.

That's what I meant about small pond. Anyone can pad out their record by fighting 20 cab drivers. Boxers do it all the time.

2013-07-31 09:20:28 PM
I really want to see Askren vs. GSP. I think that might be the only guy with the wrestling and athleticism to avoid Askren's takedowns. And I'm not quite convinced he could.
