I'm seeing conflicting start times for the free prelims stream.  Some places say 5:30 ET, some say 6 PM ET.  One source even says 4 PM ET.  It's a 14-fight card, so if they are in fact streaming all the prelims, 4 PM ET is reasonable.  Bellator sometimes only streams some of the prelims, though.  The graphic on both streams says 5:30 PM ET, so that's the safest bet.

I completely forgot about this and just rushed my picks through. I've been preoccupied with the MLB trade deadline. It's a large card, I hope I get to watch some of it, but it starts so farking early.

Yeah, Wednesdays for the summer series have been easy to forget.  Luckily when season 9 starts in September, they're going back to Friday nights (although for some reason, the first one of the season is on a Saturday).

a "yuge" card?

Almost hyperventaled when I heard King Mo was on the card. Did some lightning fast research to figure out if he was on the pre-lims or the main show. Didn't see him. Turns out, I was thinking of King Mabel. I have no freakin idea who King Mo is. All I know is I'm not getting any 400 lbs Men on a Mission MMA, and my heart broke a little.

Eh, I'll watch anyway. Not much on this time of year.

Looks like my first round KO pick isn't going to pan out. Brooks is being conservative tonight.

10-9 Brooks

Brooks KO round 2 for me.

2013-07-31 06:15:46 PM
I would have gone 10-9 Leone until he got dropped, and still would have given it to him if he could have gotten a takedown.  But, alas, 10-9 Vaca.

I would imagine 1st ro sports should be good for this. I think it ends in .eu now.
Search several variants of this, and if you don't find it, ill post the exact name. I'd prefer not to increase their profile by putting the exact URL in a heavily trafficked site like this.

I love Taco Bell, and enchiladas, but that new smothered burrito made me sick for like 6 hours. Something about the new white sauce they are trying out, and whatever new sauce they put inside the burrito (because the stuff outside is enchirito sauce, which I have loved for years). So disappointed.

Agarista: first ro is totally fuct,  any other streaming sites?

I'll check my bookmarks, I think I have a few. Wait... do you have adblockers? I recommend them, as well as a flashblocker that lets you opt in to each flash element. Stream 2 on 1st ro is working fine for me, btw. That 1st one was totally fuct tho.

Yup. And worse, the guys doing color are making excuses for them and the "more fit" of the 2 is sponsored by Training Mask.

2013-07-31 07:39:47 PM
Nothing worse to see in a fat is a gut and a guy through telegraphed haymakers constantly. This is early UFC shiat fighting.

2013-07-31 07:39:57 PM
Half-way through that first round they were already breathing with open mouths, would break and then do a shuffle/jump bit before closing in again and it looked flat-footed, shaking out arms and collapsing over each other on the fence.

That was terrible.  Both of these guys should be ashamed of themselves.

2013-07-31 07:40:27 PM

the biggest redneck here: If this guy has a history of doing that "unintentionally" and was warned in the dressing room, then maybe. Anyone seen this guy fight before?

No, but I was thinking the same thing. Or maybe if the shot is so on the money, the ref wants to make sure fighters don't think "Hey, if I get in trouble, I always have one shot to the jewels". I don't think it was intentional, but when you hit low, it should always be a roll of the dice. Not "those dice". You know what I mean.

Where'd I leave my vodak?

They probably don't do shiat outside of their "camps", too.

I want this to be a draw so nobody fights for the title.

That could be really funny, although it would need subtitles. "Naked and Afraid" is just a freaky premise - that's a new one this year.

And of course, PGDN to the most recent on farks entertainment tab. Ugh.

That's a pretty harsh critique for a c list org like Bellator. These are basically the guys that don't get picked for the TUF house that season. This venue is only one step up from the local shows where the audience whistles and cat calls at the female soldiers carrying the flag for the national anthem.

I wouldn't say they are better strikers, though they do have some good ones.  Michael Chandler is very well rounded, and can strike with anyone.  Pat Curran has some sick standup.  Volkov uses his range well.

There might me more (and spectacular WTFPWND type) knockouts in a lower level show because there is still a wide disparity of talent from fighter to fighter. Some of them were simply big fish in a small pond before they fought someone from somewhere that takes MMA more seriously.

The UFC is the biggest pond there is in MMA currently. After orgs like EliteXC and Strikefarce went tits up their "champions" were routinely butchered by UFC fighters that were not even main carders.

That makes sense. I could see him not understanding that, and thinking the dramatic style of wins equals better fighters.

One Bad Apple: Testiclaw: Fark that fight, that was farking terrible.  Both of those guys should burn to death.

Embarrassing.

That's a pretty harsh critique for a c list org like Bellator. These are basically the guys that don't get picked for the TUF house that season. This venue is only one step up from the local shows where the audience whistles and cat calls at the female soldiers carrying the flag for the national anthem.

C-List in terms of fighters, sure, but strength and conditioning, particularly for grappling and combat sports, has been around for -literally- thousands of years.

In the past 50 years S&C information exploded, especially out of the Eastern Bloc countries and their athletic research.  More over, this information is readily available and very, very cheap.  You can buy dozens of translated manuals for the price of a single TRX strap training system, so it isn't like there is a hefty price tag for information.

There are coaches today developing insanely strong and conditioned athletes in combat sports, as well as other sports with even greater strength, power and conditioning requirements.  These coaches make their information available, albeit not always for free, but available.

That, and the simple fact that getting strong and getting in shape has remained unchanged for the 100,000-400,000 years that our species has been around.

The point I'm making is this: I don't expect the best fighters in a C-List organization.  But I do expect top-notch strength and conditioning for every athlete in every sport when they're referred to as "professionals".

I have experience in powerlifting, throwing, highland games and grappling/BJJ.  I have trained alongside swarms of folks who were incredibly strong and in shape for their sport.  I know people who want to be the biggest, strongest, most badass people on the planet just...because, and they do it.

Being strong and having a top-notch cardiovascular system are not secret mysteries.  They're simple, just very, very hard.  I expect professional athletes to have respectable strength and conditioning levels because I've seen plenty of amateur athletes have extraordinary strength and conditioning levels.

Fighting skill is no excuse for being a weak, wheezing pussy.

It was the same in powerlifting; if a guy had big arms and huge pecs I'd laugh my ass off and think, "today will be cake".

He is a perfect example, albeit he specifically competes in crazy endurance events.  And yes, I think both of the Diaz bros need to get some strength in their games.  They can set their cardio aside and build some strength and still NEVER have issues gassing.  They just don't lift.

Other guys will do stuff in the gym, but they keep it all retarded, like Crossfit or just really high-rep stuff, since they neglect strength in favor of cardio.

In essence, they turn strength sessions into metabolic sessions which are a shiat compromise between strong and lungs.

Metabolic conditioning will always be a compromise.

It's why you have these farkers who can't pick anybody up and toss them.

Nick Diaz is all cardio.  It works for him against all non-elite guys, but once he fights top dudes he can't impose his will and loses.  A little power wouldn't hurt.

If I ever got into practicing MMA, I would heed your advice

That's the start of it, for sure.  Oly lifts are a double-edge sword in that, while useful, they take coaching time, a large amount of practice, and certain equipment.

They can be hard on the wrists and fingers/thumb, which is another consideration for combat athletes.  I think, for certain sports, they're required, but for others overused.

I dunno. He's always been confident in his grappling skills. I'm not sure Maia would allow it to stay standing if Shields tried; even though Shields' wrestling is better, Maia still has the ability to dictate just about any fight's level. I'd more expect a lot of clinching and TD stuffing.

I am excited for that fight, but it's been pretty well established that amateur wrestling and MMA wrestling are fairly different animals. From what I've seen of Hendricks and Askren, it seems to me that Askren is the more effective MMA wrestler.

You're right, he stuck with it longer in amateurs. Collegiate careers are pretty much a wash, both 2-time champs and long undefeated streaks as seniors. Hendricks beat bigger names as a collegian, beat Askren soon after despite being the (somewhat) smaller guy.

And yeah, Askren's grappling style might fit MMA better, but anyone who thinks he could really give GSP problems is dreaming and should be far more excited about Hendricks getting the chance.

styckx: I like the "Made it look easy" comment.. No making it look easy would have been knowing how to apply a single choke and ending it in the first round like anyone else could have done.

Nope. Ben Askren does it the way Ben Askren wants to do it, and he doesn't give a shiat if no one else likes it. Find someone who can beat him, if you can.

A bunch of dudes in the UFC would clown him. I'd love to see him tested against Fitch if he can be signed by Bellator.

Askren against Rick Story would also be a good fight, Koschek too.

Because it bothers you.

I just read that the Tito vs Rampage joke is Pay Per View.. There better be 12 other really good fights on that card.

That was the plan all along, and it won't be the $19.95 variety. $50 (or so) to watch Tito and Rampage, with maybe Chandler blasting another guy not ranked in the top 30.

But here's why: it will solve Bellator's contract disputes, since they will now be able to go into court and say with a straight face that they're a PPV content provider.

Bellator can't assemble a card worth close to $50, honestly the UFC rarely does, and those that are worth PPV price usually end up on cable.

Of course not, but they can use it to beat Alvarez and others in court when it comes to the matching clause once they are an actual PPV provider. The crux of what Alavarez (and soon to be others) is arguing is that Bellator can't actually "match" an offer by the UFC that calls for PPV points because they're not actually a producer of PPV content. This would solve that in the eyes of most judges.

This whole charade may be as much *or more* about future contracts than making money off this single fight.
