That's D*, or so I'm told.

So I have a feeling that I'm missing some critical points.

1) Who is this guy?
2) How and Why did he piss off the Russian Mob (for indeterminate values of "idiots on internet forums" == "Russian Mob")?
3) Ignoring the "Why did the Russian Mob think shipping heroin to his house was a good idea", why was he on the forums where the Russian Mob was talking about shipping heroin to his house?

The Russian Mob using police tactics? Tell me it ain't so!

Still not sure it's going to fly as an excuse, compared with the much more likely "I F'ed up and ordered heroin on the silk road like an addict"...

1. He is Brian Krebs and one of the more prolific IT Security writers out there. He isn't exactly a tech guru, but he does a ton of investigative reporting on cyber crime.
2. He investigates a lot of crooked scams and bad guys and he writes about them. He has been a thorn in the side of a lot of the carding bad guys out there for the past few years, so it is really no surprise that they are targeting him for shenanigans.
3. He, and plenty of other security researchers, go underground to find out about what the bad guys are really doing and how they are doing it. It is really the only way to defend against their actions.

He was also SWATted by someone a few months ago. At this rate, Krebs can pretty much do whatever he wants and when the police arrive all he has to say is, "hey, someone's out to get me". To which the police will say, "man, not again. Must suck to be you. Have a good day."

Of course, one's cynical side would wonder... is this his grand strategy? One day he'll pull off some huge heist and by then will have built up plenty of plausible deniability.

He's lucky that he's in the situation that the cops actually believe him.  Everyone else would be looking at time in the slammer because they unknowingly pissed the wrong person off.

I like these troll headlines, makes the idiots who can't read an article stand out. I didn't see anything mentioned about the Russian mob here. Just some random hackers that needed to crowdsource to come up with 2 bit coins to by some drugs.

How about you farking move? If they keep escalating the crimes to frame you one day you'll end up dead with three bullets in the back of the head. In Russia three bullets in the head is always ruled a suicide.

I've used Tor before and only heard about the Silk Road recently...what I don't understand is how do you not get caught? Also if you're paying in bitcoins, doesn't the value of the bitcoin change all the time? So how do they put a value or a fee on the items listed on there? I don't understand any of it.

that is if your lucky.  i have heard that they will photoshop you with trrrrst photos when you get swatted, there a big chance you just get murdered.

Basically, you can use Tor to hide your IP (and thus your location) and you can use BitCoins to hide the origin of the money (and thus your banking information).  No guarantees on how well it works though.  (Among other things, Tor is a CIA project designed to help revolting people in dictatorships have a secure line of communications.  If you own enough infrastructure or an exit node because you're the CIA, you can trace it.)

As for pricing, they can just charge in BitCoins.  It's no different than a European firm selling things in the USA in dollars.  You just give yourself enough of a buffer to always make money.

If he were clever, he'd update that the package contained talcum powder instead of heroin, in which case the mob's attention would turn to the Silk Road supplier that "ripped them off". How could they prove otherwise?

Also, they ship the drugs first class USPS which guarantees that your package is free from search or seizure without a warrant (Fed Ex and UPS can check any package they want without warrant).  The seller would use a fake return address (or a real one that's not his) to send the package, thus remaining anonymous.  The buyer can deny that they were expecting a package if anything suspicious happens with the shipment (they ask you to sign for the package, or something like that).

/Never done it myself, but I've read a couple articles about it.  Some of the journalists had the audacity to ship the drugs to their job place...

The beauty of it all, is that he pulled it off 3 years ago.

Instead of drugs can you piss them off just enough that they send you a hooker?

Naw...the police send you child porn, then arrest you for it. That way you are assured of a memorable prison experience.

Bah, pass.  I'll wait until they start sending their sex workers to my house to frame me for having an orgy.

Really, all he needs to do is get Dwayne Johnson and Barry Pepper involved.  They'll take down the whole ring.
