A photo on the blog shows a red-and-black mask, a helmet and several tactical vests along with an assault-type rifle and handguns

Why didn't the guy wearing a red-and-black mask and carrying two samurai swords inform the police beforehand?!

So what I'm getting from this is that the cops in Boca Raton are completely unfamiliar with comic conventions and cosplay.

Actually, Mizner Park is very high-end so it's not unlikely that someone thought it possible they were attempting a robbery.

But, whatever. Bottom line is the folks doing the photo-shoot are dorks since they didn't alert the property manager first. Of course, if they did it's doubtful permission would have been granted.

Comicon would be a great terrorist target.  Lots of people packed in on each other, a whole MESS of media types with equipment to spread the images, and nerds are a big chunk of the internet.  You would get a lot of bang for your proverbial buck.

Heh.... when I was at my MOS school in Quantico, VA (Computer Science School, Ooooh Rah!) we used to have automatic water pistol fights. This was before the days of "orange barrel end" toy guns, we were sporting pretty realistic looking battery-powered Uzi automatic water pistols, charging down halls of the dorm, up and down stairwells. One time a duty NCO came up the stairwell and about freaked... until he realized they were only water guns.

Since then, I've been a bit more aware of the dangers of "make believe play acting" and the potential repercussions.

Tell that to the guys who killed Ahmend Shah Masood. They disguised a bomb as a camera.

The guy fought both the russians AND the Taliban.  Might have been the only stand up guy in the whole afghan mess.  And it got him dead.

LOL, that was funny....

Why was the guy biatching about a mounted patrol? It just makes the cops more mobile and elevates them above the crowd so they have a better vantage point. It's not ALWAYS because they are worried about a riot or something. You often see them when there are large crowds, near sporting events, city festivals, etc... It's the reason that cops also use segways, they're up another 9 inches or so, and can get through the crowd quickly if they need to(Despite the disrespect people give to segways, they can be useful). A mounted patrol lets you use LESS cops.

2013-07-31 03:34:06 PM
Part of the reason that you don't inform the cops ahead of time is that suddenly you have to get permits, schedule tings in advance, possibly have insurance, and sometimes hire security.

It's just like when I was in film school geurilla film making whenever possible.

2013-07-31 03:35:44 PM
Thank goodness this occurred in the United States, a utopian bastion of police restraint and public awareness, so no one was injured.

If it had happened in some despotic third-world police state like Canada, the outcome could have been much worse.

Seattle PD is actually pretty awful. They have a deservedly bad reputation, and their actions constantly get people killed or hurt. They are no viewed as friendly and helpful in our city.

I smiled out loud, reading that.  Did not know about the orange barrel ends.  Is that something toy gun makers started doing on their own, to keep "children of all ages" from coming to grief?

Pretty  much.  It started sometime in the earl 90s IIRC.  I am proud to still have my UZI water gun with no orange barrel.  I've been thinking about getting my Mossberg barrel painted with an orange tip.

I can't really blame the police for this one if you have a large convention in town and somebody tells you about dudes in body armor with weapons then you sort of have to check it out.  If you were planning to approach a group of heavily armed and armored people you would have your weapon drawn too.  Since nobody was shot so it seems as if they did their job correctly.

Hmmm, that sux.

Once again, mounted cops don't say "riot gear" to me, so I wouldn't have been too concerned, since they allow you to flood the area with less police officers. Doesn't mean that some people in Seattle might not have reason to be concerned tho, I guess... It really sux when the people who are supposed to be enforcing the law are scarier than the ones who break it.
