America is pretty messed up, but it's not so bad compared with almost everywhere else in the world.

Two Romes have fallen. The third stands. And there will be no fourth. No one shall replace your Christian  Tsardom Putindom.

Smeggy Smurf: They're not allowing queers but figure skating is ok?  Weird.

Apparently the figure skaters in Russia aren't gay:

"I can say that the best figure skating in the world is the Soviet school of figure skating," he said. "All of our people have been brought up in a very traditional way, I am personally acquainted with many Olympic champions. In fact, I practically grew up among many of those families."

We should just boycott them... fark Russia... if these Olympics are going to be the most hate-filled since 1936, the best thing we can do is keep our money at home.

That is it! That is the game for them to host/win the Olympics. Ban gays, gays protest and stay home, collect metals by the truck load. Genius!

Milonov said he is not worried about the petition because American politicians have supported his anti-gay ban.

Hell, American politicians support executing gays.

Jesse Owens pretty much biatch slapped Hitler in those games. It would have been a shame if the US was not there.

I hope any athlete who wins a gold medal and is gay loudly and publicly states as much while on the medal stand.  They'd be daring Russia to arrest and prosecute them in front of the whole world or ignore their own laws.

The NHL has been very gay-friendly in recent years, I wonder what they have to say about this. I, for one, would gain a whole lot of respect for Gary Bettmann if he kicked anyone who participates in this travesty out of the league.

Sorry. Can't make it.

I have an invitation from Obama to attend the Nazi Olympics in Berlin. We're going to cheer like mad and waive obnoxiously large flags for Jesse Owens and then Obama is appointing him to the Supreme Court.

Boycott Russian vodka.

Yes, even Stoli.  Their "oh we're not Russian we just have Russian partners and source about half our ingredients from Russia and we're all about equality!" line is unconvincing.

I hate it when people post comments like this and then provide no further elucidation. Please explain what you mean otherwise don't bother posting. I don't claim to be well studied in history, and I would love some clarification, if you might deign to do so.

During the 1936 Berlin Olympics, signs were placed around the entrances to the stadium: "No dogs or Jews allowed." Jews were forbidden to participate or be spectators.

The president of the Olympic Committee told Adolph Hitler direectly: "When the five-circled flag is raised over the stadium it is no longer Germany. It is Olympia and we are the masters there." The signs and restrictions were removed.

I hope the current IOC has sufficient brass ones to do the same.

I'm pretty sure if Hitler had said he was going to arrest any black athletes and send them to concentration camps, Jesse Owens would have stayed home.

With respect to Mr. Putin, he has not been... notoriously consistent on such matters... In Russia, gay people are regularly abducted and tortured by jackasses, and the law does nothing about it (citation(warning, graphic content):  http://americablog.com/2013/07/russian-vigilantes-kidnapping-beating- y oung-gays.html ). Now, the politicians who wrote the law in the first place say it *will* be used to jail gay athletes or athletes who dare to call for equality... so do I trust Putin to take a stand against those lawmakers and stand up for gay athletes... notsomuch. Either way, our money will go towards supporting a despotic regime... frankly, the Olympics sponsors should just pull out... I mean, you see the PR nightmare coming... McDonalds sponsors torture... I'd like to teach the world to scream in perfect harmony (Coke), etc... this is gonna get messy unless they make a stand.
